Naturspektakel: Viele Seeadler jagen vor Hiddensee

The coastal waters near the small and quiet island seem to be perfect winter hunting grounds for the raptors. Such a convocation of eagles is unique in Germany.

59.World Wildlife Fund is offering 5000 Euro reward for information leading to the conviction of the person or persons responsible for poisoning four White-tailed Eagles in Northern Germany in 2010

January 27th 2011

At least four White-tailed Eagles have been poisoned last year in a region in Northern Germany. Three birds have been found at the edge of a copse west of Gothendorf, one between the villages Güster and Fitzen, NABU* reported on January 27th 2011. It turned out that the eagles were poisoned with Mevinphos. This insecticide is banned in the EU since 2007, in Germany since 1990.

*NABU = Founded in 1899, NABU (Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union), is one of the oldest and largest environment associations in Germany

62.Three White-tailed Eagles died of lead poisoning

Germany, 2010/2011

Two birds died of lead poisoning shortly after they were found near the the villages of Bork and Freyenstein, state of Brandenburg, at the beginning of February. Two other poisoning cases are documented for September and December 2010. One of these birds is cachectic but still alive. The real number of poisoned eagles is probably higher as not all birds are found.

The scavenging Eagles get poisoned if they feed on carrion which contains particles of lead ammunition. This happens if animals, wounded by hunters, escape and die later somewhere in the fields. It happens also, especially in the winter, if hunters leave the guts of killed animals in the hunting grounds. As one result of the acute or cronically poisoning many birds are going blind and die of starvation. In Germany, it´s the most common cause of death in White-tailed Eagles.

According to “Märkische Allgemeine”, about one gram lead has been found in the stomach of one of the eagles which died recently. “This would have been enaugh to send ten eagles to kingdom come”, said the ornithologist Jürgen Kaatz.

Edit: Another lead poisoning case, Germany, March 2011

According to SVZ.de the White-tailed Eagle was exhausted and unable to fly when he was found near Groß Molzahn (Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania) at the end of February. The bird was brought to the veterinry hospital in Berlin, where it was diagnosed with lead poisoning. Because of this and an older bacteria infected wound the vet had to put the eagle down now.

67. The probably best known White-tailed Eagle pair of Lower Saxony breeds again. Germany, 2011

Seeadler am Steinhuder Meer brüten wieder

Summary: An eagle couple built in 2009 a nest in a dead poplar tree at Lake Steinhude (Lower Saxony, Germany) within view of a well frequented linear walk. They raised up one young successfully at this exposed place. In 2010 shortly before the breeding season began the tree with the big nest fell over. Thus the pair didn´t breed in this year, but started to build up a new nest 30 metres away.

The days either side of easter, when a lot of tourists visited the area, environmentalists kept a strict watch to prevent disturbances. For the public a coin operated binocular was installed at the walk. This observation point is located about 400 metres from the nest, and the eagles and their offspring can be watched very well from this place. The birds tolerate their numerous visitors, and the happenings in the nest are are an important visitor attraction at the lake.

70.White-tailed Eagle population growth stagnates in Schleswig-Holstein, Northern Germany, 2011

As in 2010, 67 occupied White-tailed Eagle's territories have been recorded; 51 pairs bred successful, 86 young eagles fledged.

Three White-tailed Eagles were found poisoned by Mevinphos in this region in January and April 2011. According to Thomas Neumann, WWF, animal poisoning cases increase. (Click here to read more about the Mevinphos cases; article 138) viewtopic.php?f=46&t=233&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&start=140) But lead poisoning, caused by the use of lead ammunition, still remains the major cause of death.

71.The ongoing debate about hunting with lead ammunition is apparently finished. Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Germany, September 2011

"The ongoing debate about hunting with lead ammunition is apparently finished. As Mecklenburg-Western Pomeranian agriculture minister, Till Backhaus (SPD) disclosed, hunters in the state's subordinate shoots from now on can do without lead-based bullets. With this Backhaus took back a decree of 2008."

72.Pro's and Con's of using lead bullets. Germany, 2011

74.Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR), Germany, recommends children, pregnant women
and women wishing to become pregnant to abstain from eating game meat killed with lead bullets,
September 2011
