83.Poachers killed White-tailed Eagle in Bulgaria. January 2014
A juvenile White-tailed Eagle, another victim of poachers, was received for rehabilitation at Green Balkans' Wildlife Rescue Center (edit: last week). The bird was found in the region of Sakar, near the village of Levka, where Green Balkans – Stara Zagora NGO has been implementing activities within “Lesser Kestrel Recovery” LIFE11 NAT/BG/360 project. For the past two months, this was the seventh shot bird received at the Rescue Center. The striking fact here is that such cases become increasingly frequent with the latest ones being recorded every other day.
Unfortunately, this winter the trend of increasing numbers of shot birds received at the Rescue Center continues. As in previous years, these patients come from all over the country – Svishtov, Bankya, Plovdiv, Madzharovo, Stara Zagora, Svilengrad ... Although Common Buzzards are the most common victims of poachers, this year species such as Northern Goshawk, Eurasian Sparrowhawk, and White-tailed Eagle are also on the “black list”…
Green Balkans’ team is aware of the fact that only few of the poachers’ victims are lucky enough to be found in time and transported to the Rescue Center for their last chance. Every year, much more birds, hundreds of them actually, fall victims to poaching activities and die out there in the wild … There is no need to comment poachers’ psychological condition, moral, and values …
And the juvenile White-tailed Eagle, another victim of insolent encroachment upon nature, could not recover from its wounds and died …
Many thanks to Hristina Klisurova for allowing this article to be published at the Haliaeetus albicilla Collection, Looduskalender

89.White-tailed Eagle found dead near Hoštice u Volyně in January was poisoned. Czech Republic, February 2014
An analysis showed that the bird, born and ringed five years ago in the Trebon Region (Třeboňsko), had been poisoned with carbofuran.
Another dead bird was found not far away near the town Spálené Poříčí (Plzeň jih district).
Sources: idnes.cz, Martina Vyroubalová and ceskenoviny.cz, ČTK, 14 February 2014

Additional information:
At least two, probably three or more White-tailed Eagles were killed with carbofuran in the Czech Republic in January 2014.
The pesticide is banned since 2008 in the EU but still often illegally used. Two examples: In the UK carbofuran “is currently the toxic substance most used by bird poisoners. From 2002 to 2011, there were 633 confirmed bird-poisoning incidents in the UK, of which 316 cases—50%—involved carbofuran” (source: House of Commons/Environmental Audit Committee. Wildlife Crime – Third Report of Session 2012-2013). According to the Austrian Federal Ministry of the Interior, at least 22 White-tailed Eagles were killed with poisoned baits in the alpine country between 1988 and 2008 (source: Öffentliche Sicherheit - Das Magazin des Innenministeriums, Nr. 07-08/2008).
