36.Egg thieves took thousands of eggs from nests. Sweden/Scandinavia, March 2013

Many of the eggs were stolen from nests of rare and protected species like Golden Eagles and White-tailed Eagles. The thieves "provided" evidence by diary entries, photographs, notes from observations and stored GPS-data.
The case could be solved by a cooperation of the British and the Swedish police.

38.Conflict of interest? White-tailed Eagles in Emden. Germany, March 2013

Since a while White-tailed Eagles can be observed over the Rysumer Nacken, an area near Emden in the northwest of Germany. But there are plans for a new offshore harbour at this place. According to the East Frisian newspaper, it is said that the administration secretary who was responsible for nature conservation matters has been suspended recently, because he reported the eagle sightings not only to his superiors but also to other people or organisations. The authorities declined to speak on this case. The spokesman for Emden says the eagles won´t be a problem for the harbour project.

39.Lead ammunition: A never-ending story? Germany, March 2013

Till Backhaus, agriculture minister of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, encourages hunters to use lead free bullets. Backhaus announced that if there will be no standard guidelines concerning this issue in Germany in future, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania will find an own solution to ban lead ammunition. Some German Länder (federal states) and also other countries have already banned hunting with lead shot in wetlands and other areas.

Lead poisoning is still one of the main causes of death in White-tailed Eagles in Germany. According to the article, in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania 93 Eagles were found to have died of lead poisoning since 1999. There are safe, available alternatives to lead ammunition for all hunting, so there's no reason for this poisoning to go on - this was also one of the results of the symposium “Alle(s) Wild?” on 18/19 March 2013 (see link below).

40.Japan seeks review of turbines plan. March 2013

“The Environment Ministry has urged a wind power company to review its plan to erect 15 wind turbines in northeastern Aomori Prefecture, as an environmental review compiled by the company estimated that 1,200 birds could die annually as a result of crashing into the turbines.(…) A number of predatory birds also come to hunt at the lake, including white-tailed eagles, which are designated as a national natural treasure, and highly endangered eastern marsh harriers, of which only dozens are believed to exist.”

47.Last of 200 Highland wildfires extinguished. UK/Scotland, April 2013

RSPB Scotland said it was seriously concerned about the impact on the golden eagle, which nests in open moorland. According to James Reynolds (RSPB) it is absolutely certain that a number of golden eagles nests were destroyed by the fire. (…) Mr. Reynolds added that white-tailed eagle eggs may also be at risk, as well as those of migrant birds such as short-eared owls, dotterel, golden plover and wheatears, which are due to nest from mid April.

48.White-tailed Eagles and other birds killed by wind turbines in Brandenburg, Germany. April 2013

25 dead White-tailed Eagles, 104 Buzzards and 57 Red Kites were reported in Brandenburg; also many other birds and bats were killed by the wind turbines in the Federal State. Currently there are 3135 wind turbines in this part of Germany (Source: Tobias Dürr, Ministry of Environment, Health and Consumer Protection of the Federal State of Brandenburg). According to Stefan Jaehne (Seebach Ornithological Station, Free State of Thuringia), it is assumed that many cases remain unreported, because wild and domestic carnivores carry the remains of the dead birds away at night. Therefore the data collected do not necessarily give the full picture of the situation.

49.Eagle population increasing in Saxony. Germany, April 2013

According to the Ministry of Environment, the number of White-tailed Eagles in the Free State of Saxony has recovered from a population estimated at about 52 breeding pairs in 2002 to a current population of about 85 breeding pairs (fish eagle: 20 pairs in 2002, more than 40 breeding pairs in 2013). But the ministry is concerned about several poisoning cases in the Biosphere Reserve Upper Lausitz Heath and Pond Landscape, where most of the eagles live. 54.White-tailed Eagle died in agony. Germany, April 2013

The lead poisoning death has not yet been confirmed, but according to the ornithologist Jürgen Kaatz it´s quite likely, because the bird was blind and showing other typical symptoms. Kaatz said the bird was ringed in Mecklenburg Western-Pomerania in 1993. Currently there are three eagle nests in the region where the eagle was found. It is possible that the young in the death bird´s nest already died of starvation.
