24.Imperial Eagle found shot near the village of Raykova Mogila, one week after a White-tailed Eagle found injured in the same region. Southern Bulgaria, January 2014

Source: Agency "Focus", 29 January 2014 http://www.focus-news.net/news/2014/01/ ... lkani.html

Here the complete story - with many thanks to Hristina Klisurova from the Wildlife Rescue Center "Green Balkans" for allowing this article to be published at the Haliaeetus albicilla Collection, Looduskalender

On January 27th, 2014, Green Balkans received a signal from officials of Svilengrad Municipality about an Imperial Eagle (Aquila heliaca) in distress in the area of Raykova Mogila village. The team of “Lesser Kestrel Recovery” LIFE11 NAT/BG/360 project implemented by Green Balkans in Sakar responded immediately. The initial inspection of the bird revealed that it was a bird of about 3 years of age, with lesions on the left wing and leg.

Following the timely coordination with the Regional Inspectorate of Environment and Water in Haskovo, the Imperial Eagle was transported to Green Balkans’ Wildlife Rescue Center in Stara Zagora. The thorough examination carried out by the veterinary specialists of the Rescue Center confirmed our fears, and the X-ray provided undisputable evidence for the diagnosis – gunshot wounds. The team of the Center hopes that, despite its serious condition, the eagle will recover as a result of the specialized therapy.

What is particularly worrying here is the fact that less than a week ago, in the same area, a team of Green Balkans found another victim of poachers - White-tailed Eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla). Unfortunately, the bird died from its wounds caused by poachers. Green Balkans’ team express their serious concern that in the area of Raikova Mogila village poachers shoot deliberately at these majestic birds, which are protected by the Bulgarian and the European legislation.

Nowadays, when conservation organizations and institutions invest significant resources in biodiversity conservation, while some individuals are lead by their own whims and complexes, shooting at these rare birds can be only considered crime and poaching. Signal about this encroachment upon nature will be referred to the Prosecutor’s Office in Haskovo.

And the Imperial Eagle has been fighting for its life for more than 24 hours now…
