Wildflower, you are not alone in wishing that Piret had reclaimed her nest. I have been hoping for that also, but as you say it was not to be.
My worry now is Madis. I am hoping he is not serving two nests, as he seems to spend a lot of time away from this one. Could Piret have taken residence in the other nest which is only 4 Km from this one. Just a thought, Hope I'm wrong.

Does she think it is a toy to roll around?

Madis please come home :slap:
Oxana knows what to do. For sure. It's her instinct that tells her what to do.
Even our parrot girl at home knew what to do when she had her very first egg. And she was a hand raised bird.

She needs to roll the egg, if the egg stays in the same position for too long the embryo can stick to the membrane inside the egg.
So, Oxana does everything as she should!

20:35: Madis returns empty-taloned again and tries to mate. Lazy horny bird, start bringing stuff :slap:
20:36: Madis leaves again...

edit: Wait, that piece of bark Oxana just moved with her beak looks new. Did he drop that on the nest before the mating-attempt?

I knew this reason for rolling eggs during breeding - but I thought (and saw) that birds don´t roll eggs immediately after laying them because the shell is not stiff and firm, but still a bit soft. They wait a few minutes until it is firm and then roll it.

So I was a bit astonished to see Oxana rolling the egg that way

not sure, but shortly afterwards it seemed she was trying to find a place that was a smaller egg pocket. The egg bowl became so big because each seemed to always be digging it out.
Not sure that makes sense , but egg bowl bottom not usually that large? And has more soft bedding to hold it . :puzzled:

I'm happy that Oxana laid the first egg.

But I'm concerned about the nest. It doesn't look to keep in place the eggs and (later) the chicks. I would like that the nest had better shape before the first egg.

Another question: Do they have to mate for every egg? Or they can made more with just the (a lot of them) mates that they already did?
