Re: ESTLAT Osprey Nest Webcam Discussion 2012

Once they can sort of fly and glide about their parents will still take care of them -- one chick jumped a bit early from the other nest but after several days later it managed to fly home. It surely was fed while it was away from the nest.

I think at this stage of physical development the chicks would be able to glide or even to navigate, if they dropped out of the nest.
The abilities of flying (take off, navigating, landing) are given to them by instinct. Forced to use these abilities they would manage it. So I assume that they could land on a nearby tree and not on the ground. Problem is that at the moment they have not enough power to take off, so they will not return to the nest and have to feed at landing site as alice44 mentioned.

For now they have to develop muscles and the courage to take off from the nest. Once they are in the air it's all instinct. See the unringed one from the Latvian nest. Terrified by the human visitor he took off, managed to land nearby and landed in the nest afer a day or so, but then he had not the courage to fly again immediately . He continued the flight training like his siblings, and if I remember correctly, one of the other sibling learned to fly before his second flight.

I worry about Nori developing later than his siblings. I hope he doesn't want to play copycat before he's ready.

Exciting days ahead as they get ready to "launch"!
No problem. Your and other people's questions are often my own questions too, and I like learning and digging up info and stories about these fantastic birds. It's just wonderful when you read these stories about how people get involved and all that.
I've also read some very sad stories. Especially one still sticks to me, about a juvenile osprey with a satellite tracker who was shot down in Nigeria because the locals there found it a "strange bird"... :banghead:

I don't think we should worry too much for Nori. As the #3 among his bigger, more developed siblings he has learned to fight and stand his ground. His wings have now grown enough to at least give him a pretty safe glide down in case he's not ready to fly.
The barn owlet in my avatar managed to fall out of the nest twice before he could fly. First time he was put back in the nest by humans, and a couple of days later he just did it again... and was nowhere to be found, so all feared the worst. Two days later he managed to flap his way back to the nest, with his still downy wings. He had to, because there the food was delivered, not on the ground. And another three days later he was ready for his first official, none-accidental flight.

This is how he looked when he fell out of the nest the first time and was found on the ground:

And this is how he looked when he had fallen out of the nest again, stayed two days on the ground, and just had returned without help. (note all the down still on his back and wings):

:slap: I left the computer and missed the delivery - and Pontu missed Madis - but that looks like a formerly HUGE fish.

6:11 Piret is mostly looking around, not eating. The chicks are preening and ignoring her and the food - they must all be full (for now).

6:15 Uno decides to go for some food, Piret feeds him
Image

6:18 Now Nori decides to have some breakfast. Elo sleeps. Uno moves over next to Elo.
Image

6:36 After some inactivity, Piret starts feeding the chicks again. I think Madis landed on the cam support
