Re: ESTLAT Osprey Nest Webcam Discussion 2012
thanks for reports and pics for today
nice to see you again Maertha
when both parents was in nest a while ago and junior was begging another sound was heard too
and some minuts ago I saw Piret was up and she did bite a couple of times in one of the eggs, and it might look as if the is a hole in it.
Perhaps I´m just too optimistic - but perhaps the next hatch is going on?

BHP, glad you saw it too. I too thought it was a pip with chick showing through
Edit: and also a sure sign: Piret is sitting very high on the eggs.

16:31 Madis lands at the nest, probably he was upstairs (landing noise and greeting calls were audible at 15:44)
16:32 He leaves the nest
16:33 Madis back (with a clump of moss?)
16:34 He works a little at the nest and leaves again
17:00 Piret gets up for about five minutes to stretch her wings
17:15 The chick is chirpy. Piret looks around and checks the eggs every now and then
17:19 Junior makes begging sounds. No fish visible; Piret walks around the nest until 17:22, then she sits down again
17:19 The chick seems to be hungry

17:39 Piret gets up. I think there´s a crack/hole in one of the eggs clearly visible
17:43 Madis back with a good sized fish (with head)
17:44 Madis leaves, Piret is feeding the chick
17:43 The second chick is on the way, and Madis brings a fish

Feeding going on, but if you look at where in the picture the little hand is and you try to watch real close, you can see the chick moving inside.

Yes, I saw something - I was not sure if I see the egg tooth or a fly, but I think you´re right, must have been the egg tooth.

18:30 Piret calls
18:33, 34, 35: Again. She´s looking around (expectantly?)
18:37 As far as I could see Madis brought a stick and left the nest with a fish immediately I´ll post a video later
18:41 Madis back with fish
18:44 Madis eats, Piret leaves the nest. The chick seems to be interested
18:46 Piret is back. She snatches the fish and starts the feeding. (Now I saw what jopie already has reported before: It appeared as if Madis wants to feed the eaglet. This time he bendet to the chick, a small morsel in his beak). For a moment both parents are there, then he leaves the nest
18:51 The egg tooth was clearly visible in the egg. I think there´s also a crack in the middle of the egg now
18:41 Fish delivery

How exciting to come back to reports of the second egg hatch in progress!! Maybe Madis will be allowed to feed his chicks once there are two or three?
I think Urmas said this nest is near a fish farm or hatchery, so maybe the hunting is good for them. Here, the farmed salmon are fed pigmented food to make their flesh darker to match wild salmon, Without the pigments (from shrimp or krill), the farmed salmon have very pale flesh.

19:31 Piret leaves the nest. Madis arrives a moment later with a fish
Edit: I was wrong, Madis brought no food this time. I checked the video - Piret left the nest. Madis arrived a moment later, but "empty handed" - he just swooped down on a fish that was already in the nest and grabbed it!
19:33 Piret back
19:34 She takes the fish, feeding begins

I think he is allowed to feed the chick, but maybe he don´t know how? My impression is, there is a kind of "feeding impulse" (as the picture shows), but just an impulse for the time being. It looks as if he will manage it soon.NancyM wrote:How exciting to come back to reports of the second egg hatch in progress!! That's how Piret also behaved at the very beginning, so maybe it's true yes. But Piret does a great job now, I am so happy.maertha wrote:

Well,Madis brought a part-fish but he's eating it himself. Piret is protesting loudly.
