At least Nori knows at which end to start.
I love to see if she succeeds to get some bites off it, looks like it and she may be hungry enough to do her utmost.

Hi to all
I havent had so much time the last days to follow the cam, but noticed that most of the time the chicks don`t know how to eat a fish by themselves...?
Only Nori tries ist?
Do the chicks know first to eat by themselves and than try to fly?
If so, it will takes a week or so till they will fly
thanks to all for the pics and vids! Really enjoy it

21:35 - Madis lands with a fish, a carp I think. Piret lands on the nest, but Nori has found the fish already and is eating from it himself. (screenshot of that got lost unfortunately)
21:37 - Nori leaves the fish and complains to Piret and wants to be fed. Meanwhile Uno flaps his wings.
21:40 - Piret leaves the nest, and 21:41 - Nori tries the fish again.
21:48 - Nori has managed to tear off some small morsels, but the head is still on and it's hard work, so Nori rather flaps his wings.

21:55 - Big brother Uno wants to show Nori how it's done.
21:59 - Uno gives up pretty soon, and Nori tries again.
Nori gave up too soon after that, and all three chicks went into a sleeping position for the night. The fish still lies there, virtually untouched.

They tried, but gave up in the end.
They still need Piret to make a good start..

So embarassed...I tried to ask a question last night, but I was at my brother's house on his unfamiliar computer, with the lights out so as not to wake up his kids. Looked at my post this morning and I had written word hash.
Anyway, here's the question (hopefully more coherent now):
All this wing practicing has got me wondering, what happens if a fledgling tries to take off too soon and falls out of the nest? Would Madis or Piret try to "airlift" them home?

Yes, a fish with the head still on is too difficult for them, but once the head is off, they can eat for themselves.Antoinette wrote:They tried, but gave up in the end.

Ah well, now they have at least breakfast ready in the nest for tomorrow morning. Or something to do when they can't sleep tonight.

First of all the chicks are way too heavy now to get lifted up by their parents. And second, from what I have read about osprey chicks fallen off their nest, it seems the parents won't or can't do any rescue attempts.Wisteria wrote:So embarassed...I tried to ask a question last night, but I was at my brother's house on his unfamiliar computer, with the lights out so as not to wake up his kids. But there are some stories of people who rescued fallen osprey chicks:

http://www.tampabay.com/news/humaninter ... ck/1220451
http://www.scwildliferescue.org/Osprey_ ... escue.html
I also found this:
Regarding recent chat about what happens if the osprey chick falls, biologist Jane Fink writes: A grounded young osprey of this age will quickly succumb to heat stroke and/or predation once grounded by cat, raccoon, raven, horned owl or the like. Young raptors can also have resulting broken bones from the fall that require an x-ray. Without feathers and defenseless against predators, lacking parental protection spells trouble for the grounded youngster.
Leaving the young raptor on the ground, without human intervention, often puts the youngster in peril.

Thanks Kukelke, that's great info you dug up. The stories brought tears to my eyes, the lengths people will go to save a helpless baby Osprey.
I worry about Nori developing later than his siblings. I hope he doesn't want to play copycat before he's ready.
Exciting days ahead as they get ready to "launch"!
