Re: ESTLAT Osprey Nest Webcam Discussion 2012
18.56 Piret calls loudly. She needs food for the chicks - chick 3 is begging for food.
19.00 chick 3 still begging. Piret flew off
19.03 Madis came to nest and then Piret. Piret "demanded" Madis to get some food
19.04 Madis flew off and after a while Piret settled on the chicks - waiting for Madis to come with a fish

I saw the end of a feeding - #1 and #2 seemed to get bites of food and then started to bounce-chirp, indicating they were full. I did not see #3 get any bites.

20.41Madis came with fish, not very large. Piret took the fish from him and started feeding.
20.57 Piret stopped feeding and settled on chicks although chick 3 never came in front of the older to get any bites of the food
20.42 not a large fish Piret now has to feed three hungry chicks

19:04 Madis leaves the nest
19:05 Chicks are awake. Piret is preening - displacement activity? Chicks are falling asleep again
19:15 One chick is chirping, now also chick No 2. No fish available. Piret moves some twigs
19:16 She sits down on the chicks again
19:41 The chicks move restlessly under her
19:44 Chick noises are louder now, Piret preens and picks at the nest material. Later she´s falling asleep every now and then for some seconds
20:41 Madis brings food
20:42 He leaves the nest
20:43 Feeding. I´m not sure if junior 3 got food; I don´t think so
20:55 Piret sits on the chicks again
20:41 Fish delivery. No food for junior No 3?

21.22 Piret left nest - then someone upstairs
21.24 Piret in nest again. She found a tiny piece of the fish from earlier I think and then stated feeding again. Before chick 3 got up, the oldest was laying on it in the beginning, Piret swallowed the rest/tailpiece - then no food again for chick 3
Piret then settled on chicks and she is calling now and then

He/she got only a few bites after his/her siblings were fed. What a contrast with Tiit&Tiina family last year when little Neli always got food. Maybe it is because storklets peck fish themselves and don't have to wait until the parent gives them a small piece of food.

Think you are right, asteria, ít´s a different kind of feeding. As Piotr/pziel wrote in his article: storklets get their food from the bottom of the nest, so there´s a "fair" chance also for the smallest.asteria wrote:He/she got only a few bites after his/her siblings were fed. Here´s the article by Piotr and his co-authors.

And I don't understand the worries some people have at all.
With most birds it is "the rule" that the older ones eat first, that is according to and to establish the hierarchy in the nest.
Birds understand that very soon.
The youngest one in our nest is also easier satisfied than the older ones.
As were the other 2 the 1st 2 days after they were born.
And when he has had enough a previous feeding he doesn't ask for food during the next feeding.
I have watched him being fed almost every feeding I saw today.
There is plenty of food and Piret is taking care of all 3 of them wonderfully!

This large fish Madis brought at 17.20
It was wildly flapping and hard to control
So the transfer was very careful
And Madis stayed on to see if everything went allright

I don´t know if there are worries, jopie. Just observation results, I think.
By the way, I agree with you, Madis fed his young today - at least pro forma. I saw it at 15:28.
Thanks to you, macdoum and b.h-p for the reports and pictures today!

Feeding, but chicks not very hungry
Edit: Piret is pushing them for some more bites.
They all have had several pieces and seem satisfied for the moment.
