i think the spots on the feathers are water, but it I guess it only rained for a few minutes.

So perhaps the fish was flown off.

The bulk of the fish was returned. I thought from the way Piret was squirming about she was expecting its imminent return.

5:07 FISH

Alice, is this the same fish that was delivered earlier? It look like a big flat fish (headless).

I definitely have the impression it is the same fish, minus the head. The size seems right.

Drat I thought at one point Piret was going to reach out and take a bite, and now I saw it carried at least to the far side of the clearing.

It is definitely raining hard, and perhaps I am hearing little voices from under Piret, but with all the rain and probably voices from other species I am just not sure.

Mom stood up, gave her feathers a shake, and flew off. Dad arrived and didn't seem sure what he should do. Video to follow.

(Much earlier, around 5 AM, Dad flew in with a fish. Mom wasn't interested. He flew off, taking the fish with him! In the video below, I wonder whether or not it's the same fish? Perhaps he ate it himself and brought a new one? This one seems smaller....)

NB: the first upload never finished "processing," so I uploaded it again --

Good morning Everybody!

6:32 The second chick hatched in the night. Feeding.
Piret left the nest, and Madis brought a big fish.
Madis stepped on the first chick, but as I see there is no problem with it.
Piret returned and fed the chicks.
Piret has learnt very well how to feed the chicks. She became very skillful now.

It is a good question beans :( The hatching started in the evening on June 16, but when the egg hatched it was dark, and nobabady saw it.
Because all of us watched the chick at first today morning, I would say that the second chick hatched on Jun 17.

When the chick is considered to be hatched: when the upper part of the egg is gone :bounce: or when it is completely out of shell? :chick:
