Elo must be thinking: enough is enough, now it is my turn.
Nori turned her back towards him, bringing up and down her feathers several times.

Birdie, your link doesn't work, but it is a good idea, I'll try it on the site Kukelke just mentioned. Thanks.

Edit: Could be a Hawk, but there are so many different species. :puzzled:

Fantastic Maertha, thank you. Indeed a very "thin", high, almost musical sound. I really do not recognise it.

Birdie, yes, thank you! Habicht ist es auch nicht  ( The hawk is not it, either) Or it must be the Red Hawk, but it is not common in Estonia, I think. I wait for somebody else to recognise it, but the same bird was near the nest yesterday.

It must be a large bird which can cause a serious threat, otherwise Piret wouldn't be so upset I think. From what I can find on the internet, the only enemies (adult) ospreys have, are eagles and eagle-owls. And the sound we heard was definately not the very typical and easy recognisable 'ooh-hu' of an eagle-owl.

I've also been thinking about a harrier or black kite, but they make other sounds than the sounds we heard.

Nori was following the intruder with his/her eyes all the time. He/she seemed more interested than afraid of the unknown bird.
Maybe the chicks have to learn a lesson, so Piret showed them how to behave, when an enemy is approaching the nest.

21:59 - Delivery of a late night snack. Uno and Nori first row. Uno gets first after Piret takes some bites herself. After a while Nori gets some bites too. Noone is going to sleep with an empty crop.

22.14 - Feeding is done. Nori had trouble swallowing the last bites with his more than filled crop.
Contented 'chup chup chup'-sounds from Nori. Nothing for Elo this round.

22.oo

That looked like a lesson.

Piret shoving the fish, which Madis just brought, towards Uno and waited.
Uno did nothing, then Piret grabbed the fish at the tail.
She always grabs them behind the head.
Piret waited again, nothing happened.
Then Piret grabbed the fish behind the head, doing everything in slow-motion, as if showing the chicks how it is done.
Feeding started.

Have a very nice evening.night/day all, untill sunday

Uno and Nori shared this meal, Elo got nothing, again the tail for Piret and some leftovers for Nori. The sandman is coming, the chicks huddle together in the center of the nest dreaming of fish, enemy birds and Urmas.

Thank you for sharing all your observations and pictures today. :2thumbsup: It´s really good to come back to the forum and to find so many interesting notes. :D

About the intruder: I´m no expert, but I think a hawk could be still dangerous for our trio.
I read a little about other nests, and in one case a hawk killed two osprey chicks which were about one month old.

Last month it happened in Scotland where a buzzard took a 4-week old osprey chick. The osprey mother reacted too late to go confront the intruder and was then outmanoeuvred by the buzzard who managed to take a chick.

It was caught on video:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/earth/wildli ... chick.html

On the other hand, ospreys are fierce when their offspring is threatened, as this bald eagle found out:

Thanks for the links, Kukelke. I keep my fingers crossed for our osprey family.

:2thumbsup:
Kukelke wrote:
19:03 - 19:05 - Piret lands on the nest with a branch, disturbing the kids, first Nori, then Elo. Nori rises up and stretches his neck to see what is happening. Elo who also got disturbed by Piret moving this branch, sees what Nori does, and interpretes this as Nori being defiant. Elo threatens Nori, without actual pecking, but the message was clear. Nori submits and bows his neck.

:hi: Kukelke and thanks for your fine observation :2thumbsup:

I can add to this the very beginning of this, because there was a reason why Nori stand up.
After feeding ended Piret wanted to flew upstairs, but Madis was there so as usual she then decided to get more nestmaterial - a new twig which she also decided to balance to the other side of the nest
Image
but Piret obviously lost the grab and it fell over Nori who didn´t want this on the back and then stood up which Elo percieve as a provocation

and the result

also thanks to others for observations during the day :2thumbsup:

:hi: jopie have a nice weekend
