Re: ESTLAT Osprey Nest Webcam Discussion 2012
This scene cracked me up
Chicks looking like cushions, or maybe pressed blankets... (Just look at ELO) little, feathered and tremendously cute pressed blankets xD

Why Piret did not provide shade for the chicks? I know chicks are bigger now, but if she spread her wings, she could protect one or two chicks from the heat of the sun.
Nori still have some downs between the plumage of the wings.

A civil servant, you mean? I thought he was more like being a "tough guy" playing it nonchalant.Kukelke wrote:Hehehe, you saw it too. First thing I thought when I saw that was "he looks like a gouvernment worker in full action" (gemeentewerker in Dutch).

Kukelke, I saw the pike you found a picture of. As far as I can judge you are completely right. The spots and vins are the same as the one Madis caught, well done you

It's rather cloudy so there's not much shade to give. I've seen Piret give shade to the chicks before:andi7 wrote:Why Piret did not provide shade for the chicks? I know chicks are bigger now, but if she spread her wings, she could protect one or two chicks from the heat of the sun.

So my guess is that she'll do that again when it's not cloudy, and hot.

15:49 - Looks like a small headless fish was delivered a short while ago, and Nori is working on it.
15:56 - looks like Nori has given up his fish-project, but I saw him tear off a few small bites. The fish is still visible in the branches of the nest rim.
None of the other chicks seem to have noticed that fish, or they are not hungry enough to care to try themselves.
16:18 - Mighty Nori finds a pretty large branch and turns the nest into a construction site once more (where's his safety helmet btw?).
All three chicks have their long legs stretched out.

We should have called him Bob, rather than Nori. Bob the Builder, that is.Havoc wrote:Nori is quite the architect isn't he

16:59 - Delivery of a rather large fish, possibly some sort of carp.
17:02 - Elo and Uno get first. Nori waits on the side.
17:06 - Nori's turn.
17:23 - Nori moved away, Piret found the fish Nori had been working on alone previously, and Uno & Elo came for a second round.
17:27 - Piret left the nest and returned with some nesting material.

I`m sure Nori is a female! Or does the osprey males working on the nest too?
As I remeber, mostly Nori moves such a lot of branches.
[My housework is done for today , no more branches in the the living room ]
Edit : I've just found something about "do birds sweat?" Answer is : Not really, their body temperature is around 40° and they can reduce it a bit (how?).
For reducing the temperatur they feel, they pant, spread their wings, and they fluff the feathers.

I also think the look like flying ants. I found this on Wikipedia:
The males are built for the only purpose of inseminating the queen, and can't even feed themselves for the few days of their lives.[3] During "the quick and violent mating," the male literally explodes his internal genitalia into the genital chamber of the queen and quickly dies."[3][4]
The young mated queens land and, in the case of ants, remove their wings. They then attempt to find a new colony. The details of this vary from species to species, but typically involve the excavation of the colony's first chamber and the subsequent laying of eggs.
