Just heard that Ilmar may have perished on his migration - can anyone confirm this. Tragedy if he has.

Woopy, where have you heard this and with which facts (rings found, bird found?) was this verified?

Ilmar was one of the WOW ospreys - ospreys picked to be tracked by schools in many countries.

http://www.ospreys.org.uk/wow-interactive-schools-map/

You will see Ilmar started his migration from SW Africa and can be tracked up to south of Greece and no movement since 8th April.

Ilmar (without the 'i' on the end) is an Estonian osprey.

The osprey you are talking about is from Finland and has the name Ilmari.

Zoom in on the map and you see that Ilmari (with i) is from southern Finland.
Also see: http://www.ospreys.org.uk/meet-the-wow-ospreys/ and scroll down to Ilmari.

But sad if he indeed perished on his migration.

Besides that, Ilmar (the Estonian Ilmar) had his transmitter removed last year and so his migration cannot be tracked at all, I think!
But let's hope that the Finnish osprey is just having a longer break (or his transmitter is broken, just like Piret's was last year).

Oh wow - what a luck that this is a misconception :faint:

I hope for Finnish Ilmari all the best - perhaps a defective transmitter.

Could be the same as the one earlier this morning. When it flew by I couldn't see any rings on it's legs.

By going after the necklace I think the osprey on the nest this morning was a female btw.

Also tended to guess female - but because of breastfeathers. In Wisterias picture they seem to be darker than in pontu pic.

Can these unringed ospreys on the nest be earlier chicks of Ilmar's family before nest cameras?

Owlie, I think no one really knows who these unringed osprey are - but since the young do not return from Africa for 3 years or so, they are possibly youngsters from another nest, not from Ilmar.

This is about the Finnish osprey Ilmari:
Ilmari's transmitter has given repeating signals for a long time from the sea - that is why it is obvious that he has perished there:

"Unfortunately, it looks very likely that Ilmari has lost his life in the waves of the Mediterranean, since all these fixes during 11 hours (including all the inexact ones) have come from the sea. According to the fixes from 19:27 and 23:03, Ilmari floated 5.7 kilometres to the east-southeast in that time."

Ilmar from this nest has no transmiter anymore: it was removed last summer after it stopped working. So we can't know what happened to our Ilmar. Hope he is OK and soon appear here.

It was NOT our Ilmar, but a "Finnish" osprey ILMARI.

@kyfisher, Ilmari wasn't one of 'our' ospreys, but a Finnish osprey. However, it is still sad to read that this one died with land in sight, and it makes one realize again that migration can be very hazardous. I read somewhere that the survival rate of adult ospreys from year to year is about 85% - which means that 1 out of every 7 adult ospreys dies. For adolescent ospreys the survival rate is only 50-60% btw.

Having said that, 'our' Estonian Ilmar (without 'i' on the end) got his satellite tracker removed last year, so we can only guess where he is now, and keep our fingers crossed for a safe return for him and his female Irma. They could arrive any time soon.

@kyfisher:
The bird, that's lost, is Ilmari, a finnish osprey. Not 'our' Ilmar! But of course just as sad!

For 'our' Ilmar: He returned on April 22 last year, so there's still lots of time...
