Meija (OC5L) the other tagged young latvian black stork is 10 km east from her start point, after she made a short journey to south.

August 04

good morning :hi:

Zilukha has spent at this place the night.
Birdfriend, I believe, that Ziluks travels with her. I just hope it. Normally, the siblings flies alone.
I watched the Bavarian sibling in the previous year. There were three. All had a transmitter.
The first one who flew away, came back after 4 weeks

Lianaliesma, I'll make frogs on my balcony an a Pike :rotf:

Hellem, 400km are very much for our little Ziluka :2thumbsup:

Good morning

Generally I knew white storks better than black storks quite simply because I started to discovered them a lot of years ago.
On top of it there exist more white storks closed by human buildings and with it more webcams of them.
But my observing of the black storks was much more intensiv because the cams of Estonia were much better, the best of Europe in fact.
And, I keep having the impression that the black storks are more affiliated with each other than the white storks.
That is what I like so much with them. And that is the reason why more emotions get aroused.

The greater attachment to each other makes me believe that Ziluks and Ziluka will stay together, at least on their first travel.

Last winter I was observing every day about 20 white storks who got transmitters by SOS Storch Schweiz http://projekt-storchenzug.com/datenlogger/
Three of them were domiciled in the very north of Germany, in Bergenhusen. The mother and two kids.
The siblings stayed always together - until down to the Pyrenees. There, one of them seperated itself and went its own way.
That was its mistake because the next day he got shot by an idiot hunter or attacked by a raptor. The ornithologists couldn't say which one of those reasons
because they have found the stork only many days later. Its body was already half putrid.

Unfortunately, that is the sad reality, we must face up to.
Every fourth of the storks didn't come back because of accidents, mostly because of the god-awful power poles .......

Maybe it's not a station, only one moment when the transmitter sent the last position data, while Ziluka was flying.

Good morning! :hi:

Liz, why do you think, that "Ziluka has spent at this place the night." ?

The last position you can see on the map, is only the last position data which was sent by her transmitter at 2015-08-03 13:30:17.
At this moment we don't know where Ziluka was from yesterday 13:30.

Maris Strazds believes that Ziluka is already in Poland.
The last transmission point is 300km away from the nest

Macko, I thought, that the data is in real time :slap: . I have not considered that it is not always sent.

Ziluka in Poland, that is great! If she finally choose the way to Germany, France and Spain, it will be easier than on the East.

asteria it would be surprising, if she choose the western migration route.
The black storks from this region use the eastern migration route above the Bosporus.

As I know, the 70 % of the young white storks won't live to the age of three.
60-70 % of the young black storks won't live after the first winter.

So I think 5 tagged young black storks is not enough to know about something their migration, and knowing where they will return after three years.

In Hungary we had 36 young tagged white stroks in the past 5 years and only one of them brought back it's tarnsmitter to Europe. :(
