Thanks for the update on Birdmap
Alive and well as it looks
Seems he is moving around in Jämtland, not easy to catch

Tõnn is seriously moving - or so it seems on Birdmap.
Some 400 kilometres southwards in 2 days, August 23-24.
2008: started from Estonia at end of September, arrived in Spain (El Hondo) end of November.
2009: started from Finland at end of July, spent some time in Estonia, arrived in Spain beginning of October.
2010: started from Sweden mid-September, route via Denmark, arrived in Spain mid-October

Oh, that was quick, still summer weather with +20C.
Hope he takes a glide just a few km to the east and finds Färnebofjärdens National Park and nearby nature reservs http://www.farnebofjarden.se/start_eng.asp a mosaic landscape of old forests, wetlands and open water.
Guess he could find a good nesting place here for next year. Some parts are closed during nesting season to protect the nearly extinct White-backed Woodpecker.
The park is well known for it's owls, woodpeckers, Ospreys, boulder rich terrain and the dang mosquitos. (ah OK, they have their right to live too )

Report on possible GSE just N of Stockholm in Swedish Artportalen! But they do say that identification is uncertain.

Is Tõnn making a study of bisons in Sweden ?
Leaving the (mainly) US flock at the farm in Månsåsen, his latest position on Birdmap is just some 20 km NE of Avesta, steelmaking town with the European bison as symbol of the Avesta stainless steel (these days belonging to Finnish Outokumpo).
There is a large herd of bisons at Avesta, now in the care of the city, originally brought there by the then owner of the steelworks as part of a project to save the species.
About the Avesta European bison park HERE - clickable link to English summary too

well, Sweden is a big and long country and there are not many people using artportalen in the northern inlands.Liis wrote:Tõnn is getting attention from birdwatchers! - some 35 notices in Swedish bird obs list Artportalen in 3 days vs 0 for months up north
One GSE was seen 3/9 at Falsterbo, southern tip of Sweden, hesitating to migrate, comments say that it was a young bird so it's probably not Tõnn, pic
There were also observations on a LSE 2/9, pic
+notes of Pallid Harrier that have breeded successfully in northern Finland and probably in northern Sweden too

Tomorrow we will see, if Tõnn is still in Sweden. Suppose, he is!
Yesterday Tõnn was seen near Svalöv in Skåne at 12:26 (Swedish time), it is almost same place we know last data from 4th of Sept. That is informed by Magnus Hallgren, who got bird alert message though special bird messaging system (BMS) in Sweden. Magnus observed Tõnn also in stopover place north of Vänern Lake. But Tõnn was too far (500m) to take any photo.

Tõnn was seen for 5 mins. yesterday (Sept 11), about the same distance from Öresund Bridge (to NW) and from Falsterbo (to SW) from where he probably crossed to Denmark last year, like many other birds of prey.

Urmas on Sept 8:
Still a question: why do GSEs who stray to Sweden, prefer to cross to Denmark at Falsterbo, where Öresund is quite wide, instead of further north - narrowest at Helsingborg-Helsingör (Elsinore)? Especially as GSEs are said not to like crossing larger waters.
On Sept 14th update of Birdmap Tõnn was still in Skåne, south Sweden. He was observed on September 13, report in Artportalen, a little bit nearer to Malmö & Öresund bridge than earlier.Urmas wrote:Tomorrow we will see, if Tõnn is still in Sweden. Suppose, he is!

Tõnn was seen by several people at the Skanör-Falsterbo peninsula yesterday, one observation HERE - observer says antenna could be seen with binoculars.
So - he is probably on his way from Sweden. This is an often-used crossing point across Öresund to Denmark & continent for birds of prey.
PS. Last year he left Sweden on Sept 28; was already in Germany on Sept 29 Urmas told us .

Tõnn is still in Skåne, south Sweden on Sept 19 according to Birdmap update (and mother Iti is in Estonia).
Several reports of seeing him, 4 on Sept 20, 2 on Sept 21 in Artportalen.
Some photos from Sept 20 HERE, text in observation, from 11.45 to 12.05, says "Tõnn circling around, hunting; then glides towards Norra Grönby. Antenna on back and ring on right leg".

At least 6 observations of Tõnn today. Weekend, nice weather - at least in Stockholm, migrating birds observation period too: Skanör-Falsterbo is a popular site for that.
Flight picture with antenna showing HERE
He was seen at the channel running across the Falsterbo Cape (Falsterbonäset), very close now to a traditional crossing point for many birds of prey to Denmark (click blue circle with white "i" in photo information for map).

Beautiful pic :)
Yeah, the observers should see the antenna before naming the bird as Tõnn since there are other GSEs migrating, also LSEs that look about the same on distance.
edit: new update on birdmap but it does not show him flying over Falsterbo, the peninsula to the southwest, maybe he just went there for a quick look?, how often are signals sent per day?

Tõnn is now in Denmark, crossed Östersund Strait near Helsingborg two days ago (27th).
Four locations per day is best we can get for Tõnn in autumn time (after every three hours). But sometimes the caps appear in data, though. So he could make quite long secret flights.

And mother Iti is moving too.
Tõnn crossed nearly on the same date as last year, but - being Tõnn - another way this year, of course.
No notes of observations of Tõnn in the Danish Ornithological Society's obervations database yet.
