Re: Tõnn's Travels
Awesome leonia
I found the report on ornitho.de but I wonder why he is called a hybrid LSExGSE? I thought Tõnn was a pure Greater Spotted Eagle
(silly me have missed something again? )

Thanks to your question I asked Urmas Sellis, whether it is hybrid or not, because I had several sources, that said it is a hybrid. The plumage too showed some kind of difference to pure aquila clanga (the diffuse white patches on the upper side of the wings).sigge wrote:Awesome leonia

But Urmas answer was clear: "by our DNA data Tõnn is pure GSE."
Now I changed the report at ornitho.de this morning and the report to the rarity commission too.
So your solid objection helped to give a correct report! Thank you very much!

Nice leonia
Now he entered France north east of Besançon.
Weather looks rather bad for migration so maybe he'll stay there for a while? -if so a good chance for more people to see him
See bird reports of region Franche-Comté here http://franche-comte.lpo.fr/index.php?m ... _DOffset=2

I think the best weather is good wind in the direction of the wintering area. When Tõnn crossed Germany we had dull rainy weather with cold wind from Northeast. But for Tõnn it was suitable because the wind pushed him in southwestern direction.
Rain and cold weather may be no problem for most of the birds as long as there is enough food around. And a bird like Tõnn is even able to starve for some days when he has had enough food the days before.

Now he is on the French Riviera and weather forcasts looks rather good so I guess he will be in El Hondo in a few days.
Finally he is reported on the french site http://www.ornitho.fr/index.php?m_id=4 (look for Aigle Criard)
(after a tip by me ) but it seems like noone has seen him in France so far..

Nice place that with summer weather, he has also been seen there last two days: http://www.finesystem.co.uk/birdwatchin ... hondo.html
Just read an old bird magazine from 1993 and there was one adult GSE wintering 92/93 at the city dump of Mariehamn, Åland, along with WTEs and GEs. Snow storm there now brrr..

Tõnn started migrating north ,latest position is near Barcelona.
This will be interesting!
It seems like his data is updated every 2 or 3 days?
Edit: now I read that he has a GSM transmitter and the update intervals can be changed remotely
