One other GSE has been seen in southern Sweden but it seem to be a young 2K bird not ready for breeding
And that other GSE has released a flood of observations in the Artportalen bird reporting system. 32 notations as against a paltry 3 for Tõnn during the last 7 days ...
Admitted, Öland - where the other one has been seen - is a much more open, flatter landscape and with more people than Lapland.

Tõnn is far up north in Sweden according to Birdmap data June 2, around lakes Ormsjön and Holmsjön. Someone might have seen him - or maybe only reports the Birdmap location? - on June 2.

The latest, and probably only, known Swedish nesting of GSEs was in Norrbotten, in the 1980ies (?), and probably not successful: eggshells on the ground one year, no young; just some work on nest the second year.
JanE - any more information?

Meanwhile that other GSE, seen on Öland, has moved further south (Skåne), followed by a number of reports in Artportalen, and may have been heading out across Öresund towards Denmark (photo HERE).

No news of Tõnn?
Latest update of Birdmap June 2nd, latest notice in Artportalen (the Swedish bird observations site) from June 2nd: someone looked for him in the most recently reported position but no luck.
From south of Sweden (Öland) one more report in Artportalen of a spotted eagle on June 11th.

Good news - Tõnn is back on Birdmap, latest data from June 12 (thank you, Urmas!)
He seemed to stay for a while somewhat west of lake Ormsjön in southern Lapland, but latest move is again towards west and the Norwegian border.
There have been heavy rains and thunder in places in Sweden, including up north, so that may have influenced his movements.
Is he seriously searching for a mate?

I suppose at his age he must now be thinking of a family but where will he find a female if they are so rare :puzzled:
I see from the newspaper that Norway has also had terrible storms and even deadly mudslides.
Thank you Liis and Urmas for the update. :2thumbsup:

No reports of Tõnn in Swedish bird sightings database, Artportalen, since June 2nd.
Has everyone up north in Sweden ticked off Greater Spotted Eagle on their species count list already?

Instead there is some excitement and a number of reports of the other GSE, in South Sweden (Öland and Skåne), and of a black stork, also walking around in Skåne.

PS, June 26th. Still no further reports of Tõnn by Swedish bird-watchers.
But a black stork has been sighted just N of Stockholm (at Angarn, small lake with bordering wetlands); nearly 130 observations reported in Artportalen between June 23rd and 26th ...

Update on Tõnn on Birdmap :2thumbsup:
He has moved from lake Ormsjön to another lake, Bellvikssjön, somewhat south of Ormsjön during the last few days.
Nearest community, Bellvik, first mentioned from sometime about 1725, population about 200 in the 1950ies, now just over 25.

Thank you, Liis, for background information of the area!
But the area seems to be really empty of people now... would be very interesting to look on place the landscape and conditions. Probably quite many Golden Eagles breed in these wild areas.

Let's hope Jan E. looks in - or other members who have been in the area!

Quick Internet check says that there are certainly golden eagles around, but rather few just where Tõnn is now.
Tõnn is in Västerbotten county ("län"), municipality ("kommun") of Dorotea
(some data & map in Wikipedia HERE )
In 2006 81 golden eagle pairs were known in Västerbotten county (about 500 pairs in all Sweden); but of them, only 1 pair in Dorotea. However, Åsele, SE neighbouring municipality, had 17, and Vilhelmina, northwards neighbour, 10 pairs. Although the golden eagles probably don't bother much about municipality borderlines ... The report said too that golden eagles had been favoured(!) by large clear fellings, creating open spaces in forests for them. And that between 1995-2005 no domestic animals except 2 dogs had been taken by golden eagles, ("tame" reindeer not included).

PS. Birdmap update July 3: Tõnn has moved back towards lake Ormsjön again.

Tõnn has returned to his place from last summer, west of Storsjön in Jämtland, Birdmap update July 12.
Thank you, Urmas!
Report in Artportalen too, from July 12, but unclear if he has actually been seen, or if the report is just based on Birdmap positions.

Yes, "gnm" before the name in Artportalen means it's second hand information so noone has actually seen him this year. (dang, feel like taking a ride up there  )

There was an interesting observation of another GSE in Norway south of Oslo June 5th: http://www.artsobservasjoner.no/artport ... eID=186541 As said in the comments the bird is determind to 3cy by Dick Forsman and no visible signs of genetic mix, the same bird was seen most of May around Skagen, northern Denmark, and seem to have crossed the wide Skagerack sea

Oh :headroll:

One adult GSE reported today at Hjälstaviken, NW Stockholm, heading south 13:15 CET
Could that be Tõnn?

So where is Tõnn? No reports of sightings in Swedish Artportalen (everybody already ticked him off on their rarity lists?).

Checked Swedish Artportalen, birds section, for Tõnn - no reports since mid-July. No other GSEs reported either. No news, good news?
BUT - had a look around in the site generally. Submitted observation reports in last 2 weeks have been around 5000-8000 per day  .

Yeah sure but he has not been reported as seen there: http://www.artportalen.se/fennoscandia_ ... 11&month=8 then there is the Danish netfugl.dk..

Is it only silly me that have problems shifting to autumn season on birdmap
I'm up now working a bit east of Storsjön.

It seems he likes the cambro-silurian flat marshlands below the mountain range like in Ormsjön and Oviken.
Golden Eagles keep higher up and should be no threat.
