Re: Tõnn's Travels

Thanks, good to know!
On his journey back, will he have longer stops here and there or go straíght back? And will he start his journey back depending on the weather on the road, or the weather here (however Tõnn would get to know about that - GPS weather forecast service...), or just that it is time to get going?
Are spotted eagles true to their birth regions / growing-up regions? Any difference for male and female birds - I guess what I am asking is, if Tõnn meets a charming female eagle on his journeys, who decides where to live? :)

All peculiarities we will see if Tõnn will let us know!

I'm not sure if Tõnn will return to Estonia first summer after birth. As Spotted Eagles will breed in 3rd year of their life (by our knowledge), its possible not to fly so far to north before mature age. But that's only my presumption...
Also I do not know if Tõnn will winter next year in the same place - there in Spain have been seen almost juvenile Greater Spotted Eagles.

First, Tõnn should survive to breeding age! There is long way to go.

Probably the pairs for breeding will established on breeding areas, not on migration.

Thanks, Kotkaklubi / Urmas!
Another question: How long does a transmitter last?
At best (seeing to batteries, electronics, materials), and on average (I guess things happen, like the birds getting it off, more wear than expected etc)
What decides the lifelength of the device technically (with solar power not necessarily batteries?)
Edit: The Kotkaklubi interview is for this month - so the questions can go there, of course.

Article about Tõnn:
http://www.looduskalender.ee/en/node/3017

the transmitters we use, last usually three years well, after wards lose slowly ability to transmit data. But some of them work for many years. Mostly depends lifespan on battery inside device (being charged by solar panel), ie not directly from solar battery the tags obtain energy. Main problem is power - solar panel should be exposed to sun, and if some feather or dirth will cover solar array - the produced energy will diminished remarkable.
I had a plan to participate on producers (Microwave Telemetry) conference in US to learn more about transmitters, but due current economical situation decided not to travel so far. Maybe in the future...

At last some news about Tõnn! http://www.looduskalender.ee/node/3603

The article says that on April 13th Tõnn started to move to the North and yesterday evening he arrived to the North Sea. The map shows his way - green is the route he took last autumn, the yellow triangles should be his travel this spring
(I think so, it's not mentioned in the article :puzzled: ). In the picture there are trees (on left side) where Tõnn stopped in the evening of April 25th.

Sorry for my English, I would like to give you a better translation, but... :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

Latest stop (Sunday, 26 April) was Altfunnixsiel near Wittmund on the German North Sea coast. They hope that he will stay over next Saturday; there is an all-German "bird race" on then with thousands of binoculars sharp & ready to notch up a sighting
(article in Looduskalender DE http://www.looduskalender.ee/de/node/3654; in German)
If he knew, he might return to you, MacDoum ...

Carmel, I sent your question off in what I hope is the right direction!
The trouble is, the people who deal with this are having a very busy time of year. If only these birds would learn to stagger their travel dates it would be more manageable!

Lets hope Tõnn will hold the northern course. Though his first spring migration is unpredictable, it seems he wants to return home, you are warm welcome Tõnn :D

Tõnn arrived yesterday to home county!
Visited also our Sea-Eagle camera nestsite, or at least was very close there...
More data will be in LK later.
