Re: Migration Map

Post by Urmas »

Migration route of Erika is not well showing real timing, because quite old transmitter does not send us all locations any more, so sometimes we need to base on other (Argos) data, being not so exact, but showing movements as well.
Therefore it seems so big jump in one day...
But new Ospreys with full data and even two of juvenile WTEs are inserted into map.

Thanks! Great to see that you managed to get all the gps-spots for Piret into the map. Now we can see exactly how she flies!

But I wonder a bit about the area that she and Erika is in now. Where do they get fish? I can't see any water there at all, no lakes or ponds, no rivers. I hope, as you asked for, that someone here knows someone who lives in that area that can tell us more about it.

Sylvie Lefevre wrote:there is only one way to keep water and fishes that directly to south following the Nile
because at east or west of the Nile that really desert and no water and no fish. but from the delta following the Nile (except crossing the town of Cairo and some others big towns) they will find water everywhere. look Egypt on a google map , it is green all along the Nile.
the problem start after Aswan around the lake NASSER, there is water not so many fishes and some crocodiles
but I don't know where they want to fly.
Sylvie, this is Erika's migration routes of the last 5 years. She didn't follow the river all the time, but she found the river from time to time, enough to fish (I think). Probably Erika will go with the same route, but... ...what about Piret? (another question):

Thank you so much! New questions in my mind! :banghead:
But, Urmas, please don't think that questions are for you; only are questions in my mind... ...and I suppose in your mind too

Why, after 280 km of straight flight over the sea, suddenly changes course and goes straight to the Delta at 125 km, if she was the nearest point of the coast at 90 km? Does she saw the green vegetation from that distance, or was guided by another factor?

Image

Piret once reached the Delta, it is clear that she was following the eastern edge to the south, leaving a barren terrain on her left and a green and fertile terrain to her right, but .... why she stopped where she stood? What she found there that was special? Irrigation canals with fish? Tall trees??
Erika was there that day; Piret stopped there by the presence of other ospreys?
The last three years Erika has stopped there, after going through the full thickness Delta. Why? She just stops when the delta finish and meets the desert? This assumption can not be the cause for Piret stops, as she arrives bordering the delta.

Erika seems to be very quiet, while Piret is flying a lot? What does that mean?
Is there enough food in the irrigation canals? :puzzled:

Perhaps the last Erika´s position place we can see is from 02 September (probably Erika data have not been updated since that day). This, or.... ...she has lost the transmitter (I don´t think so)... or bad news (I don´t think so).
Dadel wrote:Is there enough food in the irrigation canals? :puzzled:
In Egypt it is estimated that almost 16% of the freshwater fishery production comes from the Nile and its irrigation canals (Sadek, 1988). It is not clear what proportion comes from the Nile and what proportion from the canals. The total lengths of main irrigation and drainage canals is 3 532 km which represents considerable potential for a managed fishery or for aquaculture operations assuming the canals were suitable (Table 15). One constraint to the culture of fish in irrigation canals in Egypt, and in other countries, is the reluctance of the government to allow any type of facility in the supply canals for fear of affecting the quality of the irrigation water, and reducing flow rates.

Data of Erika we get in best case after every five days now, so can't update map more frequently.
But Piret sends every day her locations (if situated in GSM coverage area).

That is interesting, it shows the interaction between people and the wild Opsrey is very important. It appears they return to a precise location. Without knowing this the irrigation water that Erika, and now Piret, have learned to rely on might be changed by people who did not know it could harm the migrating birds!

It depends from the bird's place of birth. Ospreys from Western Europe flies to West Africa but from Eastern Europe to East Africa. Piret by the way has already at Naser reservoir.
