and yet another video of the Southern Fried Owl posted in Y-tube by the newspaper Hufvudstadsbladet. this shows in the end how much people there were witnessing the operation. a man's voice from the crowd cries "eläinrääkkäystä!" meaning "cruelty to animals" at the moment when the owlet drops in the bottom of the net. what else could be done? they couldn't be left there on their own...

For all of us Tawny Owl fans:

Tawny Owls in Heligan, Cornwall, UK - first egg hatched about 24 hours ago, yesterday, May 4. Not sure if it was mentioned here already - it is a manmade nestbox, but with a "natural" look ...

http://www.heliganwild.com/webcams (also a Barn Owl webcam).

Tawny Owls in Letland - 3 eggs hatched (first on April 28). http://owl-lv.appspot.com/

macdoum it says there might be trouble with a new Internet Explorer version. I am using firefox and it worked fine -- the barn owl one kept going dark and then light. BUT the tawny owl view is great!

now also the third eagleowlet has got bracelet on. it fell of the homeroof at about noon on May 3rd, i.e. on Wednesday and landed on the sidewalk next to the terrace of a sushi-restaurant in the Forum mall. scared of the pedestrians it then ran into a corner of the terrace where an employee of the restaurant, Anna-Mari Rokkanen, photographed it.

Image Picture C: Anna-Mari Rokkanen

as the normal routine the guards came and put the owlet in a box and took it back to the roof. Marja Keränen was at the roof terrace restaurant in the opposite building and had an opportunitu to follow whan happened then. she writes in Tringa's birdforum pages that she noticed that two guards in short-sleeved shirts (it's still cold here!) came to the roof and then some feathers started to blow from the rooftop. she had guessed that ringing of the owlet was going on even though she could not actually see it. then she saw the ringer Tapio Solonen who lowered the owlet on the lower roof and took a picture of them.

all the owlets have now metal rings with only a number code. in addition to this the last owlet's (who is the biggest of them all) ring was marked with pink tape which will wear off. in today's issue of the newspaper Helsingin Sanomat there was an article telling that the sexes of the owlets have been determined now. the first two to get rings were boys and the last one is a girl. how appropriate that it got the pink ribbon!

the newspaper Ilta-Sanomat writes about this event that curious people began to come close to the owlet to take pictures. the wary owlet began to warn the paparazzis for not to come too close by opening its beak. fortunately one person in the crowd understood it and told the others to stand back.

the threatning of the owlet did not stop the guard from netting the unsuccesful flyer-candidate.

the freshest news tell that the owlets have now learned to fly in a reasonably controlled way and the have been seen to cover longer and longer streches without landing on streets or pavements.
here's a news article by the newspaper Helsingin Sanomat. sorry: text is in Finnish only but there are pictures and a video (click on the smaller icon).

Helsingin Sanomat has also declared a contest for naming the owlets. suggestions should be delivered to the editor of Helsingin Sanomat by next Friday.
i have no ideas what-so-ever what the names could be...? :puzzled:

Once I got to the photos I could not retreat to the main story, but most of the information is there in the pictures.

So the main link, if you want it

:slap: Oooupps..! That was a near thing. There is one fighting to get in and the other fighting to get out,I suppose ?
Its a pity they don't have a front resting place, (platform ). apart from the branch they cannot cling on tightly to the metal box.
Thank you Bosuil.
I remember that link, you sent many owl-calls from there before. :D

Very interesting video. It seems that there is traffic control problems. Maybe need to install the note "preference to those who get in"?

If you look carefully, there is something like a net in front/below the entrance hole.

Here's a great clip from a feeding I saw last night (clip not made by me) - a mouse is delivered and the owlet tries to devour it tail first ... :

lovely owlets! :loveshower: thank you bosuil! :shake:

the Helsinki city eagleowlets can now fly and land where they want to without difficulties. they have also been spreading their territories and are therefore not seen so often anymore and also not together.

one of them sat on the window sill on the 5th floor of the Main Post-office building on Thursday last week. the owlet looked curiously inside the room for more than 10 minutes at people inside. it didn't get scared away even when the venetian blinds were pulled up.
Image Photo C: Maija Valtonen

they don't have proper 'horns' yet but they seem to be growing already: there are small tufts on top of the head.

the eagleowlets were named Kundi, Friidu and Stara last week. the names are in city slang of Helsinki and can be translated approximately as Guy, Doll and Bigshot. 8-)

in the webpage of the Newspaper Helsingin Sanomat there are also some videos recorded by readers.
http://www.hs.fi/kotimaa/artikkeli/Huuh ... 5266394900

in this clip (recorded by Joona Ilppola on May 18th) one of the owlets has landed the window sill of an apartment which the owlets had been watching for few days. now one of them had enough courage to come and get a closer view. in the end the other owlet can be seen on the roof of the opposite building where it's watching what the other is doing. on the video one woman says: "I wonder who is actually being watched now..".
