some sad news about the eagleowlets in Helsinki city: one of them almost literally dropped dead in Alexander Street on Sunday June 5th in the middle of the night. actually an eyewitness tells that it was barely alive when it fell but a little later, at 2 am the rescue people found it dead.
Reader's picture in Vartti- city magazine by Helsingin Sanomat
it was taken to the Zoological Museum for autopsy which later confirmer that it was the female owlet who was named Friidu ('Doll'). its overall condition was fine with a lot of underskin fat and mass of well in excess of 3 kg. its liver had split which together with other injuries pointed at that the cause of death was a collision with something hard.
here's poor Friidu on the table in the museum morgue.

the city is a strange environment for owls with the flashing lights around all through night. the owlets can't have a built-in 'compass' for navigating in that kind of surroundings. a deep forest would be their natural habitat. it's almost a miracle that they all got this far, fledging their nest. this whole story was sooo much out of the ordinary so far that it is a small wonder....

But it is not just in the city -- our Spot flew into something and did herself an injury (and I think it is a common problem for peregrines, at least within cities), the first year of life is dangerous.

Hello macdoum!
Thank you for the link. I took some more pictures of the owl but did not se the babies - only on one pic I saw a little fluffy grey anything...
I am waiting for seing more of the babies - just now there are two ones.
Will put a pic later. On youtube there you see the persons Tracy and Allen from 2010. They are the leader of the Blog for this sweet Owl and say good bye for 2010.
I dont know if I am allowed to put the link here, because it is not a video by my own. If it isn't okay, then remove it, please.
