Bleggi we hope the best for the Little owl chick but I do not think that there is a lot anyone can do.
You wrote this
I had liked to adopt two birds but when I dont understand what I have to write I cannot connect contacts to Beleef de Lente
The offer to adopt a bird there means you donate money to Beleef....that is the 'adoption'.
I do not know why they did not offer an English part there, like last two years,I wrote but got no reply.
You can encourage the little one in your mind and we all hope he will survive. If he can stand,if his claws are working,he may survive ? Who knows.

Macdoum, over the past years, it was just my personal volunteering act to offer English translations at Genietvandelente.nl - I never cooperated with Beleefdelente. In fact, for years we have sent them suggestions to improve the forum (and a.o. add English), but they never reacted, just said "we will think about those suggestions". We then started our own forum that allowed people to mail each other, post pictures and clips and many more things. They saw us as a competitor ...
You have a message at Genietvandelente.nl now.

Anyway, since the owlet's situation is not clear for several non-Dutch watchers, I decided to translate a few of the relevant blog posts - see here

I hope to add some more today.

Not yet ... the female has been back with a moth and 3 rain worms.
It is indeed heartbreaking to see ...

I am on this cam much time every day and I could cry without an end for thinking about this poor baby owl. Some days ago one wing was under the hurt leg and the baby did not know how to walk, turn and also not able to eat, when mom was holding the meal to him/her. It was heartbraking to watch. Somebody could say: You can turn your cam off or you dont watch at all. But it is not better for me doing that.
Yesterday I was happy to see the video where the legs are on their place again like before. So life continues and nobody knows how it will go on. Only I am glad to know that there is enough to eat like it seems. One big question for me is how the owlett will be able to leave the nest with one leg showing forward and only with one foot the bird can find foothold.
Some pictures of the last days I have on my computer at home. Often I meet one of the parents in front of the nest-house. Perhaps they need some rest, too and being with the little one does not bring much sleep.
I keep my fingers crossed for this little bird and the parents

It is very sad news to hear that our Little Owl died. I would like to know why. Hopefully it did not die by hunger. Little Owl had needed more energy than other babies for getting things done. So many power were needed going from one place to another one - slipping under moms mantle etc.
When a kitty dies some people say: it goes over the rainbow bridge. Perhaps the Little Owl could fly to the place where animals may rest in peace.
With tears in my eyes I say: "Good bye, Sweety!"
Yours in Love
Bleggi

The owlet has been taken out of the nestbox (as was announced yesterday). Just posted another translation of the blogpost where the first findings are discussed: preliminary reconstruction - the lack of food of the first days (when the male had disappeared * and the female stayed on the nest to keep it warm) have caused a lag in development that it never managed to catch up on.

My 2 cents: if one disturbs the nest to take away the owlet while the mother is present(for scientific reasons, yes, I gather that), then just as well one could have decided to save the little bird this horrible ending by taking it out earlier.

Edit: * disappeared for 5 days and then suddenly showed up again.

Bosuil: I was just looking on my dict what the word "Tierquälerei" means in english, its like "animal-abuse". This word i have in my head since two weeks when my mind goes to the Little Owl.
Thank you for explaining about the lost of the daddy in the first time so the little and mom could not have food enough. I am very angry that the people who is responsible for the nest not could wait until mom had gone. I saw her before when she suddenly with crying fled in the edge like now she knows exactly that the little owl is dead. I could not stay longer for feeling so heavy pains in my heart and crying. Later when I came back the nest was empty. I saw the video - it must have happened some minutes after leaving. I am glad I did not see it because I had to leave for the dentist who pulled out a tooth. I was laying there with red eyes. Now I will stop writing, but this words I had liked to say. I know that life is hard - my husband died very young more than 40 years ago by an accident in his business.
Bye and hopefully until a better saison with the Little Owl

We felt your pain too Bleggi. Such a sad,sad time on the Little Owl's nestcam this year. Things happen, ours is not to question what happens in nature but with the webcams it so painful to be a helpless witness.
Sorry that this brought back sad memories for you.
I hope you will find some joy and some happiness in another nest soon..... or at FFRC sometimes. Hugs to you.

Thanks to Bosuil for the end chapter.

Can only agree with your reaction to Bleggi, Macdoum. It sure is very hard to disconnect this with our personal experiences. I refrained from watching in the last week or two for that very reason ...

Incidentally, I just translated some other blogposts today.

Thanks you very much for this translation. This was very interesting story, although sad. Especially for me as owl specialist. For example I don't now before that especially important is feeding in first 5 days.

And now a "retrospective" has been posted about the Beleef de Lente season of the Little Owl, so I translated that as well - here.
A very well written summary, but personally, I can't help thinking the last days' suffering wasn't necessary.

The last days in the evenings I heard some noice at the nest and when I was watching I saw the mom waiting for dad and they made the sound like they did before they got married. Mom was sitting in the nest on the right side and dad was in the other room. After some time he left and then mom, too. He returned with something to eat and took it along because mom had left.
The last evening dad came first - waiting for mom. Then he left again not thinking that mom would appear, but she did.
I would like to know if they think it is early enough to start building a family another time? Now the cam is off and they will do what nature gives to them. Would be wonderful to meet again next year with more luck. Only God knows....

It still hurts to think how painful the life of the Little Owlet has ended - could have ended a better way ...
