Yes, perhaps. They laid the first egg on April, 21 and the second one 5 days later. I dunno exactly for how long the incubation lasts.

Thanks, asteria. It would be great to follow the chicks of this couple and the Estonian chicks at same time. We can only hope, I know.

Did he let us understand that the eggs are 'dead' ?

Who knows how long time the eggs were alone at longest? 4 or 6 hours or more :help:

How long time were Klaara's eggs alone at worst? Was it some 8 hours..?

(Well, the eggs of these eagles and of Klaara's were in different phase, and then it was winter.

I'm just wondering, that we may follow a sad story.. though interesting.)
Renandeli, I understand Urmas´s post different.
"Fortunately eggs seem to be not broken, only these(what was broken)could be not alive anymore" Only broken eggs would be not alive?

Eha laid her first egg on April 21 and second egg was in the nest 25 April

http://www.looduskalender.ee/en/node/3657

Info from Kotkaklubi webpage
The hatching process lasts for 37-41 days.
http://www.kotkas.ee/ENG/spotted_eagles.html

The first date should be on 28 May (counting 21 April +37 days) and the last date 5 June (counting from 25 April + 41 days)
I hope I counted correct, please correct me if I'm wrong :D

Latvian female eagle laid her first 1 May and second egg 5 May ( Lucy posted viewtopic.php?p=36244#p36244 )

Of course it´s only my nonprofessional guess, but seems birds will not incubate spoiled eggs, as they not raise weak chicks?

You must be right, Juta :hi: There would be no idea to say 'it is a fortune' that the 'dead eggs' are not broken.. The eggs are most propably alive! Now I understood, when you said it, the whole meaning of the sentence of U better, - now me too see the normal logic it has.

Portugal black storks incubated the third empty egg even a week after the other chicks got hatched.

It would be interesting to know the reason of such a strange eagles' behaviour these days: sitting near the nest and not incubating, leaving the nest for a night and then return to incubating as if nothing happened. Did they get quarreled and then put up?

Asteria:

Yes you are right, but we do not know when exactly the third was dead (was killed?? :puzzled: ). The third egg just was there as well as the chicks, and the chicks needed in any case the warmth of the parents. The third egg was not 'abandoned' outside the nest. It just was there, but WHEN did it die??.. It was rolled too, for more than one week, there is no deny for that.

Do dead and living eggs 'feel' same to the parents I wonder.. :puzzled:
Think about that there is inside the incubated eggs - from some phase forwards, even blood circulation when the heart begins to work, - living eggs might be warmer than dead eggs..??

I just speculated. But I think that dead eggs propably feel different be cause they do not hold the warmth as well as living eggs with circulating blood inside.

BTW, just noW I remembered, that spoiled eggs of hens roll on the table in a different way than the good ones.. I learned this from my mother long long time ago. I cant say it more eaxactly English, but it is possible to differ the spoiled eggs from fresh eggs without looking them agains a bright light.

It might be not dead but "empty"(infertile) from the very beginning.

I think that something happened to them, to both or to the other one. It was strange how they behaved.. We propably will never know what is was, were they attacked by someone, or did it happen some accident to them.. ( I do not beliebe that they have been angry - and quarreled together - to each others.. I'm not sure if my engish skills are good enough..maybe I misundestood, srry if I did..)

Even if they were attacked by somebody, why sit on the branch, back to the nest and ignore the eggs??

And I think it was last year that the Bornheim 1 storks sat on the eggs for a full month after the hatch date. There are a lot of examples of birds, especially young birds, doing that. we will have to wait and see.
