This discussion about regilaul, runic songs (and more) has migrated (?) from the Nature in Loodukalender topic with Leonia's post as latest contribution there. Hopefully it will go on for a long time!

Hope you don't mind us borrowing your topic, Arvi - and, please, do join the discussion!

The explanation to the meaning of "regi" - nothing to do with reggae! - in one of Leonia's links was interesting: simply sleigh, and the text author's opinion was that these were songs (tales, proverbs) that were used to while away time during long and maybe boring sleigh journeys.
Sounds very reasonable. Any other explanations, anyone?
Sadly, I have met - and had! - so many perfectly reasonable and good explanations. Except that some small fact was missing that upset the situation completely   . Language theories are particularly disposed to do that.

The differences and similarities between the Sami yoik (joik, jojk) and regi songs are
interesting too. I thought for some time that in yoik the melodies/sound dominated, while words and the play with words was important in regilaul. But?
