A mindless thug has killed 31 swans in Somerset, UK.
Author Terry Pratchett (apologies, SIR Terry) has offered a reward of £10,000 for information about the killer.
That takes the total reward to £26,080 or 30,703.74 EUR, 42,570.54 USD

I think everyone remembers Knut, the polar bear in Berlin Zoo.

Such sad news today - Knut was found dead in his pool.
The cause of death is unknown. There will be a post-mortem examination.

Repeat performance, for all who have been to Tallinn and all who want to go:

Church towers on the skyline, left to right Niguliste (St Nicholas), Toomkirik (Dome church or Cathedral), Oleviste (St Olav; once, 1549 and for nearly 100 years onwards, the tallest building in Europe).
Roughly in the middle of the view you can find the old city wall with towers, running left to right. The heart of Old Tallinn above that.
Far in background Gulf of Finland, glimpsed now & then.

HELP LATVIAN OWL CONSERVATION SOCIETY!

As You know it is bad situation with funds for owl research and protection projects in Latvia. Now it is known that also for next year our government will not give any money for owls. Now our project is on an internet page where people can help with voting. VOTING DOES NOT COST ANYTHING! Total 15 projects are in this voting and only first 5 will be supported. Vote for projects continues until 28th February. We ask for just 3000 lats which is about 4100 EUR. The money would go to breeding owl monitoring in Latvia for all 2013 field season, covering fuel expanses and materials for new nestboxes. As well as funding will support migrating owl camps during spring at Kolka Cape and during autumn at Pape ornithological reseach station, covering accommodation for volunteers.

And one more vote for owl conservation in Latvia is given. This vote DOES NOT COST ANYTHING, so please don't worry that it will take some money from You!!! Old Estonian customs and beliefs, remark to the post by even-wolves-dream from Eha & Koit's nest topic - gentle, kind words, even-wolves-dream!

Estonia is a modern country – e-Estonia; and how otherwise could there for instance be these webcams with their marvellous technical quality online to enjoy – and yet, yes, you are probably right, even-wolves-dream, still in contact with its native roots in nature.

There can be no clearcut explanations to why this is so, indeed it might be debated too whether it is so at all, but always fascinating to speculate.

Probably the kind of native religlion and beliefs, that were very closely tied to nature, and less to various gods, contributed and still contribute to the survival of old traditions and customs. Heathen gods can be banned, but hardly nature.

Another part of the answer to why old customs still are alive is quite simple: Estonia is a small country, nobody is really far from nature, even most city people have close relatives in the country. I notice it in the language: quite often it is a struggle to find English - known and understandable - counterparts to terms from nature, farming, forest life ... that are everyday and familiar in Estonian. Languages reflect what people do and think, that is, what they need words for!

The fact that Estonia was one of the last European countries to be Christianized – some two or three hundred years after „everybody else“ – can have some influence too.
