Re: The Picnic Grounds

Post by Felis silvestris »

Thank you all for your kind words and the crossed fingers! It did help, I just talked with the vet at the clinic, Blacky responding well to the medicaments and feels better. Since she won't eat there, they will release her home in the afternoon, the dosage of the medicament has to be adjusted again.
I guess, we will have to live with the possibility of such dyspnoea incidents in future. If the breathing gets back to normal good, if not, it'll be the clinic again. Now I know what to look for and how to react, we were both calm yesterday evening, so I could drive her myself, otherwise there is taxi or the emergency service if it's very bad.

I'll pick her up in the afternoon and get the chance to talk with her cardiologist again to hear what the suggestions are.

Our cat has got a heart condition called "HCM" - hypertrophic myocardiopathy. We know already since a few years that she has got heart problems, our vet diagnosed a valve defect, which it is not. HCM can cause oedema in the lungs, which she had in a very bad way 4 weeks back, after which the HCM was diagnosed at the veterinary clinic. She got admitted into a study for a new medicament there, so we are there now for regular checks. Another problem was, she did not want to eat, lost almost one third of her weight within 3 weeks

Edit: had to close the window as our IT person came to solve a problem.
Blacky will turn - hopefully - 12 years in May, so she is no real youngster anymore. But in general she is fighting and has recuperated quite well in the last 2 weeks. We will have to live with the possibility of the oedema coming back

You don't have to be, Manu! We are also not, Blacky is back at home and immediately looked around if everything is okay (maybe I changed the house in the few hours after I left her at the clinic and had to leave for work). I had a talk with her cardiologist and he said it was basically due to the medication being too less (naturally they try to reduce it as much as possible, especially since she did not want to eat), best would be to have it three times a day, but this is not possible as I have to work the whole day and my son is at school most days until later in the afternoon. Unfortunately I can't tell her to have it on her own
She recovered very quickly with the medication higher, they said and was impatient to get home - heard her already when they brought her  In general she is still making a good impression! Even yesterday when it happened!
Naturally it was good that I was with her when it happened, it would have been bad had it happened while she was alone. This is what worries me a bit, but I can't give up my job now. A bit of luck has to be there as well!

Flex - Tierkardiologie HCM - Danke für die guten Wünsche!

I am very tired, and I hope Blacky too, right now she still has no peace to sit, has to check every corner. My daughter said after her shift is finished, she'll come and take a look. Maybe they let her go a bit earlier since there is not much to do. Medicine is successful inside, the treat not. :puzzled: I'll get her diet ready then and after that go off to bed.
Thanks for all your kind words! :shake:

@all: please excuse me for writing this post in German, but it is easier for me, thank you.

Let me translate it as well for the others
Blacky gets a medicament for dehydration therapy since her illness causes oedema in the lungs. It was reduced, unfortunately too much and it was not enough to keep the water away. Dose rate is adjusted now and in the clinic we are part of a study for a new medicament and thus monitored well! As Flex wrote, the team there is a very good one, very nice and professional.

My daughter was here now, helped me with the diet food about which Blacky was not too happy. But I don't want to risk a weight loss again. I got some more of the diet food in the clinic, so we will keep up feeding it morning and evening.
I'll be :offtobed: and I hope it will be not too bad with keeping an eye on Blacky and getting some rest! Good night!

I have just had e-mail from Claude, husband of macdoum, our Carmel.

Last night Carmel had chest pains and was taken to hospital. Today, they have put a stent into an artery and, knowing macdoum, she will bounce back in a day or two (Claude said maybe four days)

Sending lost of strengthening good wishes to Carmel.
Come back soon, macdoum. We miss you.
