Here you can see, the translator does not know
Pigeons should take a tour and return to the dovecote, some over 1000 kmts, there are also contests mating, the male must woo the female in flight

It is what I mean, Brieftaube is German for either homing pigeon or also racing pigeon. They learn how to return to their home and are brought to a place far away and then race each other back. It's a hobby here in Germany too. Was an expensive dinner, some of those pigeons can be expensive, as far as I know.

yesterday there was a news clip about
ringing WTEaglets in Malax, Ostrobothnia in Quarken area in the western Finland in the Finnish YLE news broadcast.
i made a clip of the news film. the beginning may look a bit harsh but before anyone sends a lynching party to Finland one should watch the video to the end. there you will see the chap who was taking the eaglet out of the nest and you will see that he is a 'vana kala' (as Estonians say, meaning literally 'old fish', i.e. someone experienced) in the business. i bet he has been treating eaglets for decades and has probably taken hundreds of them out of their nests for ringing. i trust that he knows what he was doing.
(i must say, however, that on the first sight i was a bit shocked, too. later i also thought for a few seconds should i cut the first few seconds out of the beginning of the video. i didn't.)

the report is in Finnish, but i'll try to give some outlines what is said.
in the beginning the ringer in the tree says: "not bad at all: three big eaglets." the female reporter Terhi Varjonen (TV) comments: "thought the treatment may seem harsh, the eaglets didn't mind it. one by one they were put in a bag and lifted down to the ground."
the ringer Tapio Osala (TO): " when their head is hidden they are calm as they don't understand what is happening."
TV: " in Ostrobothia WTEaglets are ringed by a group of three men: one climbs to the nest, one rings and one takes photographs. besides ringing DNA samples of eaglets are taken. they are also weighted and measured otherwise."
TO (while picking a feather out of the eaglet's back): "sorry, old boy, you don't understand that this operation is in favour of science. .. it wasn't so bad, was it?"
Image

reporter TV then explains that after the eaglets of this season will fledge there will be about 300 WTEs soaring in the skies of Ostrobothnia later this summer. the number is so great that soon some eagles are expected to spread out to inland." the parents of the nest are shown circling in the sky.
Image

then the ringer TO is putting the eaglet back in the bag (which is btw on top of the box containing eagle rings), talking to it: "soon you will get back up to your sisters or brothers. bye-bye."
reporter continues: "this spring eaglets have hatched earlier than usually because the winter was shorter than usually. the WTE couple in the Malax nest has been productive in recent years. in this spring they have three eaglets." at the same time the man in the tree takes the eaglet out of the bag and says farewell to them.
later on the ground this man Pekka Peura explains that eagles have been his hobby since he was a little boy. he says: "one cannot say "no" to WTEs as it is such a majestic bird."
- the bolded part in his line is also the title of the news. the whole news can be found in this link:
http://yle.fi/uutiset/merikotkalle_ei_v ... ei/8002664
(i have marked quotation marks here in the translations although they are not word-to-word -exact. the content should be accurate.)

Interesting video and report, Ame, thanks for sharing!

One cannot say "no" to birds of prey in general, I would say! But eagles are special!

Hello everyone :hi:
A bit of interest from Hungary

The DDNP staff continued this year, the white-tailed eagle chicks ringing in Somogy County, along the Drava. This year's attractions deserve special attention in the following cases when the white-tailed eagle chicks beside were found buzzard chick from the nest. This is the fourth such case.
The WTE from nearby buzzard nest took the buzzard chick as spoils their own nest. If the chick is not resisting, the old bird does not kill, just insert the nest as food. Given the similar environment and hungry, ask for food. Requesting the sound of the adult eagle maternal instincts guided feeds.
In the last three cases, the buzzard baby flew out of it, because of faster growth catch up to the development of the eaglet :shake:

Wow, thanks Kinga for sharing. I have read about such cases, but had not seen any pictures so far. Lucky for the buzzard chick (for us even more, as we watch them right now as Estonian birds of the year)

With pleasure  Yes, the buzzard chick is very lucky. Hungary in 2012 was the bird of the year

My love for birds began with them. Where I live :shake:

I have added new neighbours to my "bird collection":

It's a whole family, I think at least half a dozen of them are flying and feeding around the trees in front of my balcony. And remember, I live in the middle of a city, next to a four-lane + 2 bus lanes road!
