A friend sent me this picture

This bird lives in the forest along the Baltic sea
As you can see the head is a light blue, the neck is a light purple and chest is Orange and
the rest is a green. I have decided to use this pic for my profile pic at google.

news from Turku of a mallard made her nest for the third year in a flower pot on the 4th floor balcony. the people talk Finnish in the video but i'll try to give the main information.
correction: the mallard had her nest on the balcony for the 7th year in a row!

they say that they cannot know for sure if it is the same mallard every year but the procedure is the same every year.
she makes the nest in the same pot each year. the people count the eggs every day when she goes for lunch to the river Aura which runs through Turku next to their building. the chicks hatch after 26 days days after the last egg is laid. the people need to know this so that they'll be at home to help the mallard get her chicks to the river bank. the mallard calls them when the clutch is ready for transport.

i counted 12 chicks this year.

Hello everybody!

The best thing you can do to watch birds from September to April is feeding them.
All you need is two small bowls. One with sunflower seed, oat flakes and hazelnuts or peanuts. The other with water.
You can place it on the terrace, balcony or even on a window board.
It doesn't matter if you live in a village or megacity – there are just different kinds of birds.

Already after a few weeks you will have constant visitors.
I do feed birds now for two years. Sometimes there are 15-20 different a day.
And from time to time there is a surprise visit.

There are discussions about feeding them in the summer, what do you think about this?
It is better to postpone this discussion ?

I am not feeding birds in summer, as I am convinced that they get enough "natural food" during this time.

As soon as trees lost their leaves I am starting winter feeding.

During all the years I am feeding, I developed my own "special mix" for the birds

Oat flakes (soaked with fat), sunflower seeds (with shell and without), broken peanuts, different kinds of millets, raisins and dried mealworms

Fat balls (not self-made) in the bushes

I still have to find a good place for the water bowl (cat problem)

I feed them in summer, too.

There is a lively discussion about that subject here in Germany (probably not only here). I was insecure about it.
The NABU (an organisation for nature) says: summer feeding is nonsense and unnecessary.
Other people say nearly the opposite: Nowadays summer feeding is almost more important than winter feeding,
because of the restructuring of agriculture and ground area.

I don't know who is right.

What I didn't want is: summer feeding only for my pleasure if it is not good or harmful for the birds.
I asked an ornithologist about his opinion. He said to me: "It won't tumble the world of birds if you feed them in summer. So, if you want to, do it."

Like you, Bea, I developed my own mix.
It's (almost) exactly the same mix as yours.

sunflower seeds (with and without): some birds like to be busy with the shell
oat flakes with fat: the dunnocks love them, but other birds as well
broken peanuts: almost all birds love them
raisins: the blackbirds favourite dish
dried mealworms: 'my' birds don't eat many of them, but a few
fat balls

I didn't try millets yet

I have a home-made birdhouse and a feeding place on the ground.

Mogga, in this year I feed for first time also during the summer. I noticed that the birds only comes to the feeding station, when they it really need. They are wiser than we believe. I know the discussion about the all-season feeding, but I observe the nature so good as I can. "Our" nature depleted more and more because we have an industrial agriculture with an high application from pesticides and slurry from mass husbandry etc..
Many bird species and insects are endangered, it's a disaster.

Birdfriend, it seems to me the same. In summer the birds come less, but they come. It can't be the same situation for them as 20-50 years before to find food.

Especially when they have to feed their voracious youngsters, it's difficult for them. The new studies about insects dying are alarming, too.

In June Mr. blackbird was coming a lot to feed his young birds with raisins.
He tried to get as many raisins as possible before flying back to the nest.

You have many different species there. I have less species here. For example tree sparrow, blackbird, house sparrow, blue tit, great tit, sometimes a robin in the winter and only single Eurasian greenfinches.
You can post so much pics how you can, I will have a look at all...

What nice pictures
We also have a lot of different birds. The first picture, everything on our balcony. Unfortunately, from 2015-2016. Last winter came much less.



Here from the balcony photographed, in the bushes were more birds. Especially the red berries love them.
