Happy Santa Lucia's Day!

i'm not a religeous person but a day in celebration of light in the middle of the darkest December is very appealing to me.

Lucia is a strangely Swedish concern, possibly merging the Catholic Italian saint - from Syracuse! - with much earlier and rather nastier creatures ("Lusse") in the darkest of dark periods.
The Nobel Prize winners are traditionally wakened on December 13 at Grand Hotel by Lucia entering with singing, coffee and saffron buns (Lussekatter). Now the laureates are carefully informed and prepared, but it is told that earlier some were rather abruptly and unexpectedly got up from sleep, very early.

This year a small equality debate has blown up: in some schools boys too were allowed to be in the competition of being "Lucia". And in one a boy won, but was almost persuaded to "resign". So discussion between equal opportunists and traditionalists ...

Old superstition in Norway.

Lussinight`s twelfth night before Christmas and the longest and most scary night over the Nordic countries
The real Christmas celebration began that night. The underground and all trolls vas moving around from this day until Christmas. Lussi a feared troll woman drove this night`s game.
All work for Christmas must be done in the right time and if the people in the house was not finish with tings in right time,Lussi was furious and tore down the upper top of the chimney.Night length led to the animal bit three times in the manger and talk with each other. This night they got some extra to eat.

ahaa! this S. Lucia's day seems to be yet another example of a pagan occasion which has been turned into a Christian celebration by giving it a new content, just like Christmas itself which is replacing Roman Saturnalia and nordic/pagan midwinter or winter solstice celebrations.

i hadn't heard about Lussi before (except our member Lussi from Norway! is here a connection? )

S. Lucia is celebrated in Finland mainly among Finnish swedes, just like Liis wrote above, but also Finnish finns know about Lucia-dagen. a Christmas calendar is invalid if there's not the Finnish flag in the window on Dec 6th and Maiden Lucia on the 13th! :D

Maybe this is the reason why on the Käsmu cam there are bonfires every day? To ward off evil spirits?
My daughter had a St. Lucia fest when she learnt Swedish! She had to cook something Swedish for this, but I can't remember anymore what she made. I remember it was difficult to find something not consisting fish, as she's not so fond of fish.

I think the boys from the 7th class, as I busted in throwing snowballs yesterday, think it might be a connection..
We celebrate Lucia dagen by kids visiting all the classes in school, signing the Lucia song, and giving away "Lussekatter"...

Thank you, Lussi. I read this article last night when I was trying to figure out why they are making bonfires at Käsmu.
