Ive been lurking off and on this cold winter but now the eagles are incubating here and one nest has already hatched one bald eagle and the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge BAEA's in Maryland are about to hatch any day now.
I was going through some old family books written by my naturalist great grandfather, john burroughs and thought i would share a couple paragraphs about the bald eagles on the Hudson River of New York written sometime before 1886 which seems fitting this time of year for all eagles
From John Burroughs' Works of John Burroughs Vol VII-"Signs and Seasons" 1886. While i have the first edition this transciption is from the third published 1904 because the pages are in better shape and i wish to preserve the first
"When the river is at its wildest,usually in March, the eagles appear. They prowl about amid the ice-flows,alighting upon them or flying heavily above them in quest of fish,or a wounded duck or other game.
I have counted ten of these noble birds at one time, some seated grim and motionless upon cakes of ice,--usually surrounded by crows,--others falpping along,sharply scrutinizing the surface beneath. Where the eagles are, there the crows do congregate. The crow follows the eagle,as the jackal follows the lion, in hope of getting the leavings of the royal table. Then I suspect the crowis a real hero-worshiper. I have seen a dozen or more of them sitting in a cricle about an eagle upon the ice, all with their faces turned tward him, and apparently in silent admiration of the dusky king.
The eagle seldom or never truns his back upon a storm. I think he loves to face the wildest elemental commotion. I shall long carry the picture of one I saw floating northward on a large raft of ice one day,in the furiious gale of snow. He stood with his talons burried in the ice,his head straight out before him, his closed wings showing thier strong elbows,--a typeof stern defiance and power.."

Thank you for that descriptive passage, Leica Eagles.
It is certainly more picturesque that saying The eagle adopted an aerodynamic posture!

The mostly young people (I think ) who run the forum/s on Beelef de Lente
need your support.
The people responsible for the Site say there must be no interference in the case of The Little Owl being 'locked' in the nest by a Dove who has established a nest too in the hallway and so prevents the owl from exiting or the male owl from bringing food
to the mother owl who is sitting on four precious eggs.
They have asked for help from people around the world to help them resolve the situation. Please post there and show your support and suggestions;
http://genietvandelente.nl/viewtopic.php?f=130&t=1266
Please,please..
edit; The people who run the Beleef forum,translations,obsrevations etc; are High School and College students !! So.. maybe not equal to defending the Little Owl's nest.

Those forrums which are not active now are moved to a new category which we have named, quite logically, Archived Looduskalender Forums. The old forums are readable but locked so nothing can be added to them
Maybe they will be brought out of storage in the future - who knows? For now, they are a part of our history

After the 1990 World Cup Gary Lineker said;mei2k wrote:Macdoum, then it would be 4-2, Germany wins either way
