Re: What is Going On?

Post by Jo UK »

We have a new topic in the Black Stork Forum viewtopic.php?f=2&t=246

Our old friend, writer and translator Scott Diel, wants to do an article on Storkaholics for Estonian Public Broadcasting.
Can you help him, please, by posting your memories, observations and comments in that topic.
Scott will be able to guide us about his requirements.

The topic is brand new and a bit empty-looking just now! We must get busy.

Ive been lurking but not posting since ive been busy photographing the Harrisburg ,Pa falcons as well as the white tailed eagle's distant cousins the Bald Eagle who are en route to points warmer for the winter. I thought i would share a couple images at one stopover point along the Susquehanna river below the Connowingo Dam on the Pennsylvania Maryland border. This river is an estuary of the Chespapeake bay

I can see the stong family relationship in these and the WTSE's

Edited: I hope these are not too large as posted for the forum :?:

These pics are fine, thanks. I am sure we have bigger images than yours - I will check the "allowed" dimensions.

What good shots of beautiful birds. You are a gifted photographer.

From watching the Hornby eagles, I think that the first pic is of a male, second of a female, third and fourth of males. What say you?

Leica Eagles - I checked in ACP (because I had forgotten what was entered there!)

Each image can be 600 X 800 pixels, and each file size 256 Kb.
Please post only 3 - 5 images per post. More than that makes page loading too slow and takes a long time to scroll through.
So you were well within our tolerances!
Hmmm - bigger pics next time??? :2thumbsup:

Yes i shall obide! At least i try to make sure each image file size is sub 125kb and sized at 5x7. Having been a former AOL chat host, i know how annoying it is to have to be "waiting for godot" til an image opens up. Especially for those using a dial up connection and not broad band.

I only posted these shots because they are the only one of two species of eagle in the USA and their white tails do show the kinship to the WTSE of estonia and the baltic states region.

Watching the eagles here and elsewhere it is interesting to see similar behavioral traits cros species and also each one's ideosynchracies. To anthropromorphize , they do seem to have there own unique "personalities" but i guess i should say Eaglealloties. (lol)

I find nothing wrong about that kind of anthropomorphising. Each bird or other animal is a distinct and separate individual, easily observed as such. (well, perhaps not so easy when watching fish or ants!) If we choose to use the word "personality," well, we have to choose a word of some kind!

I find it difficult to sex the bald eagle unless there are two together of the different sexes since either wont allow me to ask them. But they are similar to other raptors where the female is larger

Just thought I would share a couple more images taken two days after the Peregrine Falcon eyasses fledged in Harrisburg,Pa this past summer. The first shot shows "mom" perched atop a church steeple across from the scrape on the window ledge of the Rachel Carson Sate Office building. She was 12 years old at the time and was deposed by a younger female after an intense air to air battle this august.

Image

This is "Red Girl" who was flushed off the window ledge of the scrape when the Pennsylvania game commission staff completed a rescue of her sister from above the entrance to the building. It seems during fledge week that some have problems returning to the scrape. During fledge week , volunteers are stationed on the ground in case the young eyass has trouble. Well, the state didnt inform the "boots on the ground" that they were going to return the other to the scrape and that flushed Red who went missing for a couple of hours only to be found sitting atop a concrete post of a parking garage across the street

I think you can see the red tape they put on at banding to help observers identify who is who

This is the culprit who needed rescue "White Girl" atop the entrance of the Rachel Carson building

I wish i had been able to log in over the summer but we have alot of raptors around here too to keep us busy.

While i dont think this is a popluar raptor , I thought id share a few more images of This summers Red Tail Hawks who have taken up residence at The Franklin Institute science museum here in Philadelphia. They successfully fledged three eyasses this year and the year before and are currently doing nestorations on the third floor window ledge of the musuem outside their board room

They are rather permissive of humans and have no worry about the Great Horned owl to prey on their young eyasses and have an abundant food supply of rodents and pigeons

This is the female sitting atop a lamp post outside of The Free Library of Philadelphia
Image

She really is very photogenic and i hope you like her

Two of the three eyasses before they fledged at the nest box of the 3rd floor boardroom windowsill

This is the Tiercel delivering a meal to the last one to fledge

Eyas - a new word for me!

Dictionary -
ey·as (s)
n.
A nestling hawk or falcon, especially one to be trained for falconry.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

[Middle English eias, from an eias, alteration of *a nias, an eyas, from Old French niais, from Latin ndus, nest; see sed- in Indo-European roots.]

Leica, I have just realised that we are both off-topic here!

This topic is intended for news about changes on the fourm, new things happening, etc.
Your beautiful birds would be more at home here

viewtopic.php?f=11&t=48&start=200

Let's leave these pics and posts here now and move to the other topic when you have more to show us!

Webmaster has to do a security update of this board. It will be necessary to take it off-line for a short time.
It could happen any minute now!
See you later

All clear now. Update is finished. I didn't notice an off-line moment - did anyone?

There is a new database now. This one is all about the White-Tailed Sea Eagle
viewforum.php?f=47

It has been complied by Maertha over the course of the past few weeks.
There is still a little polishing to do, so don't be surprised if some of the usual forum features are not yet enabled.
Please use the "Talk About" topic for posting general observations or questions

Maybe there will be a good year for Black Storks or Lesser Spotted Eagles, and an enthusiast will complie a database for another species!

but Houston: there's a problem: the "Talk about"- page is still locked. maybe unlocking it might generate more activity there... :whistling:

As I said - there is still some polishing to be done! But, yes, I can do that quickly, unless Maertha gets there first.

That's done! :shake:

PS - Maertha is moderator of that database.

Hi ame, thank you!

Yes, as Jo said: that´s done now.

Everybody is invited to visit The Haliaeetus albicilla database.
Find it at the forum board index at "Database" or just click: viewforum.php?f=46

There´s a FAQ list with a lot of information if you want to know how the project works.

And if you think the project may interest other people, please recommend the website via e-mail, postings in bird forums or per Twitter and other networks.

it seems that i was trying to get there just a bit too quickly. 8-) now it's unlocked.

those pages have really been a tremendous undertaking. i believe they'll be of good service for all interested in WTEs.
thank you Maertha for accumulating the pages!
