SWF
From CROW - Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife, Inc.

Time to pack up the U-Haul! Ozzie is moving to the large flight enclosure early next week. That means you will be able to visit CROW's Visitor Education Center and see the live camera feed that we have in large flight. For those of you who live out of state we will be posting footage so don't worry. Unfortunately, we are unable to post the live feed on our website. Check back Monday for Ozzie's move-in date.

Ozzie was successfully moved to the large flight enclosure this morning. He was looking healthy and strong and within minutes he took his first flight. Ozzie will be in large flight for at least 2-3 weeks continuing to build his strength and agility. No release date has been set. We will keep you posted.

Thank you to Rotary International District 6960 who visited CROW for their Rotary Day of Service. They spent the afternoon filling the large flight enclosure with new sand and weeding. It was a huge undertaking and we couldn't have completed it without their help.

CROW says that they want to be 100 % sure that Ozzie is recovered of his clavicle injury when releasing Ozzie back in the nature and estimate that he will be in their care two-three weeks ahead.

From the the website SFEC Facebook:
Wonderful update from CROW: It's has been a week since Ozzie has been moved to the large flight enclosure and he continues to fly and build his strength. At this time, we are giving him his privacy to reduce stress and will provide a more in-depth update next week. We will supply video footage of Ozzie later this week. Below is a picture of Ozzie perching in the large flight enclosure.

Ozzie the bald eagle is improving his strength and maneuverability in the large flight enclosure at the Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife (CROW).
Here are a few clips of Ozzie in flight in the large flight enclosure from the past few days. The people you see in the enclosure are CROW wildlife rehabilitators bringing Ozzie his breakfast and lunch.

Ozzie did not fly the length of the flight cage while I was there. He did drop down to the ground, get drinks of water and made short flights to nearby "perches". Ozzie seems to know his surroundings well and looked comfortable.

SW Florida Eagle - News about Ozzie from CROW - Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife, Inc.

"This Tuesday will mark Ozzie's second week in the large flight enclosure. He has improved in many areas of his rehabilitation and the vets are happy with his progress. He becomes a little winded after his flights so building his stamina will be a focus this week. Ozzie still has minor wing droop but his range of motion is looking great. There will be an update and new footage available this Friday. Below is some video of Ozzie being transferred to the large flight enclosure. No release date has been confirmed. We will keep you posted. ‪#‎ozziebaldeagle‬"

So we hope Ozzie will recover well for getting his strength back.

Ozzie received his physical yesterday after being in the large flight enclosure for almost three weeks. He was x-rayed and his blood work and kidneys where checked to make sure everything is functioning correctly. During the physical, a federal identification band was placed on Ozzie’s right leg by the Audubon Center for Birds of Prey. If Ozzie becomes injured in the future, he will be able to be identified by the band.

Ozzie still has some minor wing droop after extended periods of exercise which means there is still residual soreness. He is currently taking medication to decrease any physical discomfort that he may have. Next week, he will continue to receive physical therapy to reduce soreness and build stamina.

No release date has been scheduled, but the blood work shows Ozzie is fit and healthy and ready to return to the wild in the near future. We will have another update next Friday and will post some video from the large flight enclosure during the week
There are new pictures of Ozzie as well on the CROW Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/CROWClinic

Ozzie is officially a blood donor! Yesterday, CROW received an eaglet from St. James City that was found on the ground and in a week physical state. The eaglet needed a blood transfusion and Ozzie came to the rescue. If not for the transfusion, the eaglet probably would not have made it through the night. Ozzie is doing well after the transfusion and the eaglet is currently in guarded condition. Ozzie is still scheduled for release in the near future. We will keep you posted. ‪#‎ozziebaldegle‬
One comment of the procedure on the CROW Facebook site:
Pam Suiter- Duskocy
I agree... I personally don't think they're in any hurry to release him. They've never been so popular! Get a celeb eagle through the door and they'll hold on to him for as long as they can. I'm starting to get really frustrated. They said this week that he's still too 'weak' to be released... So take some of his blood. I'm sure that'll help!

We know some of you had some concerns regarding the blood transfusion yesterday between Ozzie and the eaglet. Below is a letter from Dr. Barron, CROW's Hospital Director addressing some concerns.

The young eagle (who is probably about the same age as Ozzie’s last fledgling) would have died without a blood transfusion. He was severely anemic (with a Packed Cell Volume of 8%; normal being 35-45%). There are no blood banks for birds as there is no way to store bird blood and so it must be used within a few hours of donation. Ozzie gave a very safe amount of blood (essentially just a drop in his bucket). The same ratio that humans give all the time when they donate blood. And birds are much more resilient to blood loss than humans. It took less than 10 minutes to get the blood from Ozzie and he was back in his cage and flying around and eating immediately afterwards. Multiple studies in birds have shown that after drawing this safe volume of blood, healthy birds like Ozzie return to their previous blood levels within 48 hours (birds regenerate blood cells much faster than mammals). We gave Ozzie iron and fluids to hasten this process. There were no other possible donors. This decision was not made lightly. We carefully weighed the pros and cons because we take our responsibility as Ozzie’s doctors very seriously. But each life has value and it was felt the opportunity to save a life justified the very minimal risk to the donor. This little eagle is a dead ringer for F6 and I’d like to think that if Ozzie could talk he would say he was happy to save the life of a young eagle that could easily have been his son and could live for several more decades. Thank you so much for your concern for Ozzie and for your support of CROW.

Southwest Florida Eagle Cam

Harriet & her new beau nicknamed "FV=frequent visitor" continue their daily routine of hunting/fishing and light "nest"orations.

Unfortunately we think the lightening storms of late have damaged the cams beyond repair. If unable to fix, we will remove them soon and begin prep for a new year of streaming.

I suppose a live audience is not wanted to follow Ozzie's return to his territory - so we can await a video recording instead. That is good enough.

The news meant that Ozzie can be tracked now, but it is not true, he has only been ringed.

We are awaiting CROW video recording and more pictures. And information of the soap opera next step: how Harriet will react to seeing her spouse after three months break. How Ozzie will react to FV (frequent visitor), whom Harriet has already accepted on their territory. How does FV react to Ozzie.

The cam chat is temporarily reopened at the present, the live cameras are damaged by storms and removed - some recordings are shown now and then.
