Special pictures from the Eagle Feeding Ground Webcam 2012

here's a summary of the so-far identified eagles. please let me know if there are some mistakes.

ps: i've found one mistake myself: A479 visited the feeding ground among other days on Feb 3rd and not on 2nd, and also Jan 23rd.

Feb 21st

I could not quite make out the Y but that is what I thought I saw.

at 8.31:

I think "the table" is empty very soon. The meat is not icy, and the weather is mild.

next ringed eagle with rather unclear markings. country ring is probably white over red (SW Finland) and year ring is orange over blue (2007) with only number 1 clearly readable on the blue ring.

this is a snapshot taken from Katti's second video here: viewtopic.php?p=129334#p129334. V3 is clearly seen on the orange and the country ring has white over red meaning SW Finland. it is very probably the same bird which was seen here on the previous day: V331.

at 13.12:

the eagles stuffed themselves with easy food and by noon all flew off to the trees.
now there's a buzzard eating. the meat is well more than halfway gone.

the day was warm and wet. some eagles returned for a snack in the afternoon after resting a while in the treetops.

Based on your videos there were at least 11 different WTEs including three ringed birds (Y445 - EST 2005 born 10 km away; V331 - SW-FIN 2007; Z848 - FIN Lapland 2006).

Special thanks and greetings to Mutikluti who makes most of the camera zooming. Every day two months in a row it is very hard work!

on Feb 21st in the order of observation.

the Estonian Y445 was seen here previously on Feb 20th like the Finnish V331, too. Z848 from Finnish Lapland has been here for a longer time. previous observations are Feb 17th, 18th, probably 19th and 20th.

Feb 22nd

at 7.01 again a problem with transmission:

12:42 I saw a buzzard another buzzard chasing away ...

later in the afternoon it began snowing hard.

the eagles stayed away from the feeding ground on Feb 22nd. some sat on the tree tops in the morning and later only their voices were heard in the distance before the snowing started.

Feb 23rd

first eagles in the trees in the far back. it was snowing hard in the morning.

later in the morning it became warmer and snow partly melted and turned to sleet. at 9.17:

the sunny blink was only very short. no eagles were seen landing to eat on Feb 23rd.

here's the latest summary of ringed eagles who have been identified here at the feeding place. i've added there a column which shows the ages of new birds in winters like eagle guys seem to use as an age unit. so an eaglet who has been ringed last summer, in 2011, is 1st winter bird and has its 1-year-birthday next summer.

Feb 24th

first thing in the morning there was a surprise visitor.

Some kind of thrush? It finds something to eat there in the snow.

at the same time the fieldfare was there again.

the identity of the new visitor raised a lot of uncertain discussion which was settled a bit later.

Of course it's Fieldfare and not Redwing
