I think it would have been dangerous for the eggs to stay on the nest if the parents were under attack by some intruder/s.

Supposedly there were other eagles which disturbed the LSPs. Under threat of fighting with an attacker, to protect the eggs from breaking, it was perhaps more usefull to not to stay on the nest at all and not even too near to it. It would have been the worst imaginable if the eggs would have been broken while fighting.

If a mother bird has chicks which can't fly yet is attacked, she prefers to leave the chicks alone, and tries to draw the intruder's attention to herself to save as many chicks to survive as possible (mother birds also can make believe to be wounded and weak..But they are ready to escape at any the time..etc)

I just specultaed again..

it's 10:50 and there is peace on the forest. One eagle is incubating.

Concerning the comments about the properties of dead or living eggs, I wrote to a friend who incubates and hatches eggs in her home. She is a crofter in Scotland and is familiar with the ways of different birds. This is what she says about eggs (I sent renandeli's comments to her)

Hi Jo,

She's right about the 'warmth holding' of a live egg, but I think that is near the end of incubation.

Some incubator instructions say to look out for a rise in temperature and adjust thermostat if necessary,
but I've never had to change the settings. However I do add water for the last few days to raise the humidity
and therefore I assume evaporation would keep the temp from going too high - just my meanderings.

The pump/heart starts working very early on (poss 1st week) and I wouldn't be surprised if the bird can hear/sense that.
The rolling bit - a developing egg will have the air sac at the blunt end and the 'weight' of the developing chick
at the other.

A damaged or rotting egg will have it's contents dispersed throughout the inside of the shell, but if it had started to develop
then it might already have the airsac in place.

I know a hard boiled egg rolls differently to a raw one....test it and see, can't remember what happens - lol

Also if you put an egg into water a very fresh one sinks, a staler or developing one will float blunt end up.

Near the end of incubation [using warm water if you don't want to kill the chick] the egg jumps up and down -
I sometimes use it for a test before opening anything that might have died in shell.

It's raining in Latvia.

At at 11:18 I noticed the nest was empty. The eagle was back at 11:24 (I heard callings from the forest before it returned.. I suppose it is the same as earlier)

It turned eggs and continues now incubating.

At 12:06 I saw that the eagle took the white weathers on beak. It is still keeping it..

The eagle who has been there on the nest the whole morning, left at 13:11, it jumped to fly from the left front side of the nest this time. (It had called continuosly from about 12 to 13.. ) Some eagle, the same (?) landed on the nest next minute, from the other direccion.. Soon came the other one, the male, I believe. They were both on the nest about for 2-3 minutes. I got one hundred pictures I can look them closer only later in the afternoon.
The male brought something to eat for the female!

edit It was the male who landed first on the empty nest, with a frog. Then returned the female to eat it. Look Lili's post and pics below

At 15:36 I noticed that the eagle was back. It was half standing and looking at the eggs, rolled them, and sat down. How she stood up again and rolls the more. Sitting down at 15:41.

Now she's back in the nest.
