No panic. I have handled songbirds with very deformed and/or broken bills showing no signs of food shortage. Somehow they managed to do what looked impossible to us.

Songbirds with their bill. One "missing" foot of a WTE is peanuts compared to a missing bill of a songbird.

i agree with Hagnat. Robert will be ok. he would be able to fish with one leg only. also standing would not be a big problem.
(mating might be a different thing... i wonder if Eagle Kamasutra has any solutions for this? :whistling: )

i found this picture in the Pontu archive. it's taken at 14:27. Robert is calling and he has a very firm grip on the branch with both his feet. no sign of blood can be seen on the left foot which was the injured one. the talons on both feet operate well. he has probably shaken hands with Lady a bit too hard and will have some aches for a few days.

Liz, Last year it was a piece of dirt and it went away after a while.

Today it looked like a kind of accident.

i have now Pontu clips of today's events.
14:11 first the very brief visit of Robert. one can see that he is not stepping properly.

14:18 he come again. this time he stays on the nest. another eagle lands on the left branch but continues out. it stays only for a wink and it it not possible to say much more of it than that it had no rings. it is likely, however, that it was the female of the young strange couple who tried to take over the nest last week.

14:21 the other eagle continues to argue with Robert outside the nest. Robert couldn't care less. :whistling:

14:31 Robert sits on his branch an the other eagle keeps complaining.

Robert jumps up the the left branch and stays there calmly. the other eagle continues complaining in the neighbourhood. Robert poops (thus maybe showing how much he cares).

this goes on for some time. Robert sits calmly on the branch and the other eagle complains. Robert poops again, then stretches... and leaves. the other eagle calls even after the stretch so it is difficult to say who left first. a minute or two later an eagle can be seen flying far in the sky on the left.

i had quite forgotten that clump of mud. maybe she had a beauty mask?

to me today looked like a serious territorial dispute. the nest site is so good that it is worth a good fight. Lady likes it very much and she does not want to give it up easily. i wonder what would happen if/when Durbe came home.

I know, that it was just mud and blood. it looked dramatically. Shortly after her arrival, she yawned and we knew, that all is well.

Ame, I've read that, there may be deadly fighting around a nest. Often win the young, because they are stronger. Therefore, I would make very worried, when Durbe were here.

good morning!

it's getting light. it's very windy, for a change. the nest tree is shaking strongly in the wind.

7:59:48 the camera froze... :bash:

8:01 the camera is back. still no sound on VLC..... :help:

yes, i agree: it would be better if Durbe were at home.
i don't think that Robert is too old so that we should get worried. he looks very strong and i think he is rather big for a male. - do you remember the eagle with dirty rings in the feeding ground? we could see only some pieces of colour on its rings, and Urmas and Renno and other eagle experts could only deduce that it was ringed in 1990's. that eagle looked old and ragged. Robert looks nothing like that yet.

it seems that Lady has been the one who engages in closer fights Robert. she has come to the nest twice and has had physical contact with Robert. the male (Spotty) has stayed aside. him we have seen only twice when Robert has been away. if this is a general rule (female is the warrior) then maybe the young may also win the territorial disputes because it's the bigger and stronger female who fights against the nest owner-male (if the nest-owner female is away).

on the whole i am not worried and i think no-one should be. like i wrote yesterday: there is no need to speculate on all the things that may go wrong, because they probably will not.
i also want to remind everyone that what we are watching here is normal life in nature. accidents and also death are a parts of normal real life. as a reminder of this we just saw a deer foot on the nest. that deer was a beautiful live animal just a few days ago...

I would subscribe to what Ame just wrote. Life goes on and is beautiful in any way.

Oh yes. And you could see some things in the other nests too ( LSE attacked by the Goshawk, dying Osprey, and so on...)

a young Latvian visited without making any sound...

K013 i think? :puzzled: - unfortunately the individual ring is not shown in the P-picture. :slap:

in any still picture the code is difficult too due to lack of resolution. in movin picture the brain helps us to see. i made a close-up clip in 1/3 speed. to me it looks like K013.

i made a few other pictures which i enlarged a bit although it's not likely to make the numbers much clearer...
there's a small chance that the last number is 5. let's see what Janis will say about this.
