when the eagle arrived it didn't show its rings.
13:30 it was Vents. finally he turned and showed his ring. and then Shilute came with a twig.

13:32 Vents begins to sing to shilute and he is tickling her back...
is he getting in loving mood? yes, he is! and Shilute does not mind it.
... but no, not this time. not yet.
Vents seems to be a considerate lover, unlike Ansis.
he noticed that Shilute was not ready and he gave up.

13:35 Vents got up to the balcony.
13:38 Shilute got up to the lower left branch.
a minute later she returned and came back down.
yet another minute and she got up again. she cannot make up her mind.

That was really nice. Too bad, that Shilute is not ready yet. I hope, they practice diligently outside the nest.ame wrote:13:32 Vents begins to sing to shilute and he is tickling her back...

or use it for its own nest.Liz01 wrote:i saw the small stick the Vents has brougth. I think it was not relevant to nest construction. Possibly a tit can bring the stick back to the nest
i've been thinking about the sticks and twigs... there is some sort of a pattern in what they bring. they seem to bring several pieces of a certain kind of material to nest for a day or two and then they change (in this case Shilute; Vents always brings something small). big branches, sticks, then green twigs and today dry twigs. later when the eggs will be coming they bring hay as the last thing.
'proper' eagle men call the small things, hay and green twigs "decorations". possibly they think that the proper nest material is large sticks and branches. i have come to think that hay and smaller twigs, both dry and green, are not 'only decorations' but they serve a real purpose in the nest construction. big branches and sticks leave large holes between them. these holes need to be filled with some finer material. otherwise the eggs and little chicks might drop into the holes and that would be the end for them. the nest must be secured with a dense enough lining throughout the thickness of it. i think that this is why they bring different kinds of material to the nest, layer by layer.

Ame, you think correctly about the different nesting material.
I know, that wet hay is giving warmth by the mud. That keeps the nest bottom warm. Therefore birds bring wet muddy hay as nest material.
I had wondered, why Durbe brought so much wet hay and mud. Black storks do it too!

Ame, the address for the stream changes now and then. Therefore, it will be good to make this link to the first page?
Here is always the latest address to find.

It is already on the first page. I did not see it!

NoraR has given some news in DD at 09:36

hahahaaa, Liz was quicker than i.
btw: one gets the direct link to a certain post in DD like shown in the picture below (first the green arrow then the blue):

so it was the battery which failed. yesterday was so sunny that i think that there should have been enough current from the solar panels. the battery probably could just not recharge anymore. aging does that.

it will probably now take a few days before the camera will be fixed. Janis will order a new battery (i don't suppose he has any in storage). then they'll need a reasonably good weather for one night to take the battery to the forest. It looks like we are today we will not get to the pictures-the whole Latvian territory snowstorm, but directly in Kurzeme snow storm
In that time, no technical device will not work, so as we would like
It is a pity of course, but against the forces of nature, we are powerless, unfortunately

Thanks for the updates. So it'll be in 2-3 days?
I'm glad we have the new Bald Eaglet in the US. We watched it since hatching. So cute to see an eaglet in January.
