9:43 Vents came home. :D

i'm recording a video of the funny voices which Liz heard earlier. i think it was a jay. i hear someone rattling its feet on a branch quite near the camera. among the funny voices there are some rather normal jay voices. i think that the jay was singing. it was probably a little in a spring mood already. after all the wind had stopped and it was only raining gently.
a nutcracker also made some very loud nois- ehm voices but my principle suspect is the jay. it was even seen on the scene of the "crime" although not in action. :whistling:

9:45 also Shilute came. Vents went to the left branch.

i'll add clips later.
(Liz, i didn't make all the material yesterday. i wasn't hardworking, i perhapsonly looked like it.
the branch picture i made a few days ago. i saved it for a rainy day, without anything else special. :whistling: )

Good Morning!

John Love writes about the nests (p. 52), that the average diameter is about 1.5 m. he quotes the research of Johann Wilgohs in Norway. Wilgohs found one nest which had been in use for 8 years. it was 2 m tall and another 30 cm of material was added in the 9th year, although the nest wasn't even in use later in that summer. by next season new material was added so it became 3 m tall. the estimated weight of such construction may be several tons. on page 53 in Love's book there a picture by Willgohs of this nest. (i can't find it anywhere for posting... it would probably be against copyright any way. :slap: )
A very interesting discussion.

On this search for a picture, I think that the info of the first on the left, is interesting although it's a Bald.

:puzzled: now i'm afraid i did't quite understand...? Love's book is about the H. albicilla.
the nests of bald eagles are are very similar to the nests of WTE's.

9:42 Vents brought nothing but Shilute brought a nice cone-decorated twig. :2thumbsup:
Vents went up to the top balcony.

9:50 both changed places twice so both ended up where they were in the beginning.

funny gurgling voices they made.

the stream begins to stagger... :bash:
the weather is beautiful but the camera freezes.

i made a picture of the Norwegian nest which i wrote about yesterday in the hard way: hubby scanned it from the photocopy of the Willgohs' book which i borrowed from the library once.
the height of the nest is 3 m. there's a 3-week-old eaglet on top of the nest as a "meter stick".

14:48 the stream is back to normal.

a few minutes before 4 pm it started to snow. now the nest has a light dusting of snow.

17:13 it's almost completely dark but the shape of the nest can still be seen, thanks to the thin layer of snow on it.

Hello eagle friends!
With a start of new year and new eagle season I would like to thank you once more for your input in making this forum alive! And special thanks to ame for taking care...
This is the moment to tell a bit about the future plans: we are going to maintain camera at Durbe nest throughout this season. The same as last winter we are dependant on solar panels and batteries what means potential interruptions - during January we will have to change the batteries at least once (it depends on the weather conditions - days with direct sunlight).
Camera systems at nests of Black stork and Goshawk will be maintained as well, it is not yet decided about the Ospreys (more will be known at late February).
Have a good season and interesting watching!

Janis, Thank you for these wonderful news. :2thumbsup: It will be again an interesting season.

I'm very pleased, that the black stork camera will be back
has the battery still enough capacity. Or needs this Camra slso a new battery?

good morning!
it's so quiet and still, a real winter wonderland. only a nutcracker is ckrieking: krrrk-krrrk-krrr...

thank you for the news Janis! if the snow stays you will be able to use a sled to drag the new batteries to the forest.

8:55:30 i hear the same bbrrrrrrrr-voice as yesterday right after the krrrk-krrrk-krrr -voice! maybe the buzzer was a nutcracker yesterday? but i still think the rest of the 'singing' yesterday was from a jay.
in this clip there's first the normal nutcracker voice, then two series of buzzing. in the end also a jay was making its voice. otherwise there's only the sound of running water downstairs (and very distant sounds of traffic). it's quiet.
