Does anyone know what species of fish ospreys preferably feed?

Hello cosmopolitan, I think we saw mainly trout, carp and salmon here; maybe also other fish species. We´re still wayting for a fish expert to join us  .
Urmas wrote somewhere that nearby this nest is a lake. There are also fish ponds.

You can find a general oververview about the osprey diet here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osprey and some more detailed information here http://www.europeanraptors.org/raptors/osprey.html

Maybe you already found the text about the osprey nests and the ESTLAT project?
It´s on the main page: http://www.looduskalender.ee/en/node/13110

I have thought about the thing yesterday, when Piret (or Madis?) took the fish away. It´s really hard to distinguish both, I was watching the cam the whole time, but maybe I`ve missed a glimpse :puzzled:

Yes, it´s often difficult to say who is who if you can´t see the legs. Madis, the male, is ringend, Piret is unringend. If in doubt, I simply say "one of the adults" :whistling: .

Recently I got a fine hint from b.h-p, she told me that Piret, the female, has a "special feather" on the left side, which I had overseen up to that point. I posted this information a while ago in the forum. Think it´s OK to post it here again, it may be interesting also for others.

Piret = female, no ring, special feather on the left

Piret, special feather, no ring

Madis = Male, ring on the right leg. He is smaller than the female

With thanks to b.h-p for the hint

hello everybody,

depending on the offer he catches mainly white fish (rudd , roach , crucian carp , bleak , bream , orfe , tench).
An osprey family with three chicks needed in the breeding season 70-80 kg of fish. This can neglect the influence of fishing on fish stocks or fish eagle catches. (Info is from a german nature site)

P.S. watch our Osprey(-family) since the beginning of breeding season
Sorry for my english :slap:

greetings from Germany

NANCY, you talked about pellets yesterday. I was wondering about that too. I see them make the "movements" but never saw them produce one.
Do they digest all the fishbones?

Osprey cannot digest the fish bones or scales, so they are stored in the crop, molded into a pellet, and cast. I have never seen one actually do this, either, jopie. I was watching Piret make what I call "chicken neck dance" movements yesterday - she would be moving food from her crop to her stomach.

These photos are by Mark B. Bartosik - I think Felis or maertha gave the link to his photo gallery earlier

does anyone know about the height of the nest? Is it nearby 10 - 15 meters high above the ground?
It looks like this, the birches could be 8 - 12 meters high. :puzzled:

For those members still wondering how to distinguish Piret from Madis...in this video by UNP you see 1st Madis with ring, then Piret joins him on the nest.
See the different head-pattern of feathers. Also Piret (F) has a lot more brown feathers on the breast;

This is absolutely fantastic to read and see! I was very worried about the little one, for days I hardly dared to watch this cam, but it kept on! Go little fighter!

Good morning osprey lovers.
I have to agree that No 3 is looking bigger and catching up with the other 2.
Thanks again for all the photos (well done Cherie I have no idea how to post pics).
When I first looked this morning one of the youngster seemed to give a huge sigh then settled down with head on a twig to have a snooze. Lovely.

All 3 now sleeping.
