I'm new to this forum! I have an interesting occurrence to talk about!
I really think I saw an type specimen of Black Stork!
The strange thing is the location: about 44.8 latitude 9.2 longitude, in northern Italy.
I saw it in the first days of June. So I thought it couldn't be a migrant, because of the time..
I'm pretty sure it was a stork because its neck was straight during the fly. (further it had black wing and head, white lower breast, long legs and long beak, both red: so it couldn't be a heron)
I saw it only once: it was flying over a small river, with high rock faces and trees.

Could it be a black stork in your opinion?

Excuse my English, obviously i'm not very good at!
Welcome pinkisch!
Why not, I think it’s possible that it was a black stork. Is there a forest in the near? In my region – south of Germany – we also have Black Storks in the woods, but we rarely see them and their nests are hidden well! You where lucky! Keep your eyes opened! :peek:

Hi Andrea!
Yes, there is! most of the ground in my region is forest-covered and very little populated..
I tried to looking for it but I couldn't see it no more :(
My question is about the quantity of water I suppose the stork need to catch fish: there are some rivers, but with not so much water..
...goodnight poor little thing

Hello everybody,
I'm so happy and lucky that I want to share that with you all :loveshower:
Yesterday I saw in our paddock (that was just mowed) 14 'normal' storks that's noting unusual), but also 2 black storks!!
For the first time in my live and they are very rare here in the Netherlands.
Although I was very exited (jumping and dancing) I was able to make some pictures of them.
Hope you like them too

They looked brown, but the expert from a site where you can do special observations told me, that was just the light.
I still feel it's a very special birthdaypresent :loveshower:

By the way, when the unhatched egg was removed from the nest, during the ringing or before it? It was covered with moss, now moss disappeared together with the egg.

Yeah, that was super indead!(it was in de Gemeente Buren in de Betuwe) I hope you can see them as well one day.
Little woods, but a lot of paddocks here and only a few farms and houses (I'm not sure paddocks is the right word for weilanden (?) (pastures maybe?)

 I´ve red the black storks are much more cautious/ shy compared to white storks. So you were really lucky to see them. :)

Yes, that's right, we went into the paddock (áfter making the pictures offcourse) to feel and look at the mowed grass and the two black ones flew away (when we where still a long way from them) but the 'ordinairy' ones stayed, looking for food while we where walking there.
And now I'm leaving, have a good night/day everyone, bye, bye

They do not have red beaks - must be siblings from the nest nearby.
(I think it is too early to be a migration.)

Young black storks don´t have red beaks right away. Here is a pic I found from last year´s Tiina & Tiit 2011-conversation, "Neli". Photographer is Heikki Minn.
