First bed is made - how is it looking here? 8-)

Oh, and before I forget, nice to see you back, Bubo! You were missed already! Hope you had a nice holiday!

I do hear that strange noise again, today. :puzzled:

Sylvie - the Pontu pictures are kind of an archive, the camera (or an extra camera?) makes on still photo of the nest every minute.
Unfortunately, in one minute a lot can happen, like that attack on Wednesday, the attacker is not on a single of them! Just looking at them you keep wondering what happened that Stephi was standing like that on the nest!

It was there sometimes in the afternoon, too. Sounded a bit like a quacking frog ... but was gone again.

Stephi was breathing long times with beak open on this hot day .... maybe there is a correlation ...? :puzzled:

Kalev made exactly the same sound today, it sounded just like a frog. And he breathed with his beak open almost all day too.

22:05 - Stephi had to go, and stretched her wings, before bedtime..

The noise in the afternoon I heard too, if I'm not wrong, it was a bit different, and I thought this might be the heat and breathing with open beak. But she makes a sound impression on the whole, so I am not too worried. Bronchitis sometimes leaves such breathing problems, maybe also in birds? But then, it will hopefully be gone by the time she is ready to leave the nest!

Lussi :hi:
I´ve read what you heard from Kalev - it must have been quite similar!

@Felis
Maybe some things go away when the birds are growing - hopefully!

I rarely write, but often looking at the Stephi. And I think that her breathing due to the fact that she eats the food completely, and not in parts. And maybe pinched crop the respiratory tract.

Hi ame

I believe it was a goshawk, too. They are very difficult for me to identify, especially the differences between countries, then male vs female and goshawk vs Cooper's Hawk and then juvenile vs adult. These two have always been a problem for me when IDing, even though I have so many birding books and worked with some raptors at a rehabber in the US a long time ago.

I did notice that all photos I have seen of goshawks that are killing other birds is that they flip them over on their back and stand on them, just like that one did with Stephi. I don't know for sure what Cooper's Hawks do for sure. I believe I had a Cooper's Hawk in my yard, killing a bird this past spring. I have photos but they are pretty blurry.

Maybe it thought Stephi was too big or too much of a problem (with her fighting and screaming back at it) or maybe it was young and inexperienced. I just hope it stays away and does not come back!!

the hawk that attacked Stephi had bare legs. actually they can be seen rather clearly in Susie's original picture
(viewtopic.php?p=156550#p156550 ; i'm getting more and more amazed about the quality of her picture! i thick Susie should by a lottery ticket, as she was so lucky here! )
the bare feet can also be seen in the pictures which i took later frame by frame from the video provided by Urmas Lett. the screenshot are in this P-bucket album:
http://s561.photobucket.com/albums/ss54 ... 4QQtppZZ16

i have also been frustrated by the diversity of the differents looks of goshawks in pictures which i have found for Accipiter gentilis.
(i've also :banghead: myself several times for not taking with me to the country the raptor guide which i bought a year ago (a quick flash: The Raptors of Europe and the Middle East: A Handbook to Field Identification by Dick Forsman). there i would find descriptions of all raptors of Europe in all possible costumes... now i'll get my hands on that book next week...)
i think that vainamoinen is convinced that the attacker was a goshawk and he knows birds (and especially raptors) best around here when the Real Specialists like Urmas Sellis are absent.
The woods are lovely, dark, and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

The Mole is gone so Stephi must have eaten it.

7:15

Remo delivered a good sized Vole and Stephi swallowed it.

Earlier in the season Remo brought lots of little tiny voles, or maybe some kind of small mouse creature -- recently I have seen bigger voles.
