I looked at them just before I went to bed last night -- but I was speechless.

BTW, that BS on the right of the third Toomas pic may be Padis. The ring is not seen but he is smaller than Toomas and has the same light feathers on the head as Padis has.

Hi, I can upload the originals of the Toomas-photos as big as they really are, and put here 'clickable' thumbnail pictures so that people may watch closer the other Black storks too..asteria wrote:BTW, that BS on the right of the third Toomas pic may be Padis. edit: hm.. I don't know if photobucket accepts 2600x1500 pixel pictures, one of the pictures is that big.

The problem is that "supposed Padis" stayed on his left leg with ring and without ring it is very hard to identify him.

Yes, you are right, but I think that it is ok to believe, or to hope, that it is Padis! It could be. They may have been flying at same time in the same group to same place, to Israel, if not even longer. Do the adults fly together when they migrate, don't they? They are the youngsters who use to fly alone. I'm not sure, I doubt my memory sometimes.asteria wrote:The problem is that "supposed Padis" stayed on his left leg with ring and without ring it is very hard to identify him.

There is in Carsten Rohde's page one so ingredible beautiful photograph by him. At first sight when I saw it I thought this is Toomas! But no, it is an other ' satellite Tomas' from aus der Tschechischen Republik:

Schwarzstorch "Tomas" aus der Tschechischen Republik (beachte den Satellitensender auf dem Rücken) auf dem Wegzug im Beit Shean Valley, Israel 2009. "Tomas" gehört zu den "Projektstörchen" des Programms "Flying Over Natura 2000". Hier wurden 2005 in Spanien, Frankreich, Belgien, Luxembourg, Tschechien, Ungarn, Estland und Lettland Schwarzstörche mit einem Satellitensender bestückt. "Tomas" überwinterte 2005 in Ostafrika (Äthiopien).

These beautiful pictures make me very lonesome for our storks. I hope they come home (in pairs!) this season.

I can't say for Raivo and Priidu, but other storks (also GSEs) are still on wintering grounds (by yesterdays data). Data transmission from Raivo and Priidu was last at 21st of February and next one is preposed to be at 3rd or 4th of March. Think, we can see then Raivo migrating northward already... But also Pirsu is very far, in Cameroon, so he needs to hurry also.asteria wrote:They must be on their way home now.
Carstens images are really good and he knows well Israel fish ponds and the Black Storks there! If i remember right, he was twelve times there for ring readings and only last year got good camera for to get quality images for all of our pleasure...
Many thanks, Carsten!
