35. Problems of Protection of Forest Habitats of Rare Species in Regional Reserves of the Altai Kray are Resolving

by Nikolenko E.G., Karyakin I.V., Gribkov A.V

Published in: Raptors Conservation, 2012,25 p. 28-33.

Online: http://issuu.com/raptors_conservation/docs/rc25

Abstract

A project “Save the rare species in the sanctuaries of Altai”, financed by Global Greengrants Fund, was realized by Sibecocenter (Novosibirsk) and the Gebler Ecological Society (Barnaul) in 2012. Surveys carried out in 2012 have shown that the most valuable territories for birds – with old pines – were cut down in the past 7 years, and the most of them were logged in the last 2 years. A total of 107 nests of rare species and 157
nests of common species of raptors were observed during the expedition, and 22 breeding territories of rare bird species were found being destroyed by felling. The damage, estimated according to fixed rates of the Ministry of Natural Resources amounted to 7 million rubles.
