Latvian WTE nest webcamera: Juras-Erglis 2014

5.58 the male brought another stick and the female brought her stick 2 min later.
6:02 the male left but the female still worked in the nest.
6:04 she left, too, and after a short while she called a little in the forest.
i have tuned the brightness and contrast up in this Pontu clip.

11:54 the male brought a stick and he left at 11:58.

when he was gone the female came 26 s later. i cannot see if she brought anything, at least nothing big. probably she came to see what the male had been up to.

the male brought a new stick at 12:03 and looked for a place for it. the female got up on a branch in the foregorund-right and took off from there at 12:06. 17 s later the male followed her.

in earlier days this kind of departure has been followed by a mating outside the camera view. this time they called in the forest in a normal way: they just sang together.

Michi, did the eagles leaves one right after the other? and what kind of calling was it? can you say if it was a mating call? (mating calls is very excited screaming )

on pontu-pic one can see, that at 12:06:36 both eagles were still on the nest; at one of Airras’ pics one can see, that the last of them left at 12:07:16.
Unfortunately I have no picture from the departure in my head (was a little busy at that time). But I’m quite sure, that – if they have not left together – I would have noticed the particular times. So I think, both eagles left the nest between 12:07:00 and 12:07:16. More accurately I can't say it.

The eagle calling was not a mating call, I’m sure. It has sounded “normally” and has last only few seconds, - not very excited, not with sharp and high voices, just a few short shouts.

i'll check the video in more detail soon. i wrote (to reserve the space) the above note based on just looking at Pontu pics. the video was not processed yet.

Edit: now i've watched the video. you'r right: the last (the male) left the nest at 12:07:16.
the female left the branch in the right-foreground at 12:06:59, i.e. only 17 s earlier!


very often, after leaving like that, i.e. male right after the female, they have mated somewhere near the nest, but not this time. you wrote that they just sang normally and that can be heard on the Pontu clip.
in the very early morning they tried to mate (it sounded incomplete). maybe an egg might be on the way...

i have now checked last night's Pontu recording. i didn't listen to all of it but checked every now and then how it sounded. swans didn't go to sleep at all: whenever i tried i herad swans talking on the lake. from 4 am i listened in fast-forward till 5:30. from about 4:45 the swans' whooping became even louder. they don't seem to sleep at all. (but who could sleep in that racket! ).
the 'soundscape' will feel so empty after they have flown to North.

at 5:07 there was a rustle of feathers near the camera: someone was there roosting.
at 5:19 the eagles sang a duetto, a dialogue: the male started, the female replied and the male then finished the song. it din't sound like mating. in fact it sounded like they were in different places but equally near to the camera.

later an eagle called "kaa-kaa-kaa-ka!" rather near the camera 4 times, at 5:30, 5:46, 5:50 and 5:51. i may imagine this but it sounded like the female's voice and also that she became more and more impatient. who can say? six min before the first call there was a strange khrmh!- voice.

then at 5:55 when it was still nearly dark the male flew in the nest and began nestorations. he seemed quite perky already at this very early hour. less than a minute later the female flew in. then they both worked in the nest.

the female got up on the left branch and left at 6:03 but the male stayed arranging some sticks around the nest.

at 6:05 he flew out, too. a little later they called in the forest nearby. it sounded like an attempted mating, but not successful.

at 6:09 the screaming repeated. this time the voices came from a larger distance and that sounded more like a successful mating (the swans were shouting so that it was difficult to hear).

i'll add pictures and Pontu clips later when they are processed.

now the swans became silent a while ago. i think i'm hearing voices from far... like humans talking. is someone on the lake?

i think i have heard raindrops all morning. for the last hour or so the rain has become stronger.

edit: i watched the Pontu-video again and it seems that she came empty-handed after all. she was working with some greeneries after she had come.

she has been in some shelter so far: her back and shoulders don't look wet.
