I saw all four of them ;-)
I read that these owls eat bugs as well as small mammals, but momma sure does not seem to have much interest in that moth flitting about the nest.

Good idea to set up a new forum!
About the Little Owl not catching the flies: clearly she is bothered by them, on the other hand, in the dead mice that are stashed in the nestbox (and in the "hallway" near the entrance, right under the 2nd cam) for some time, flies will lay eggs and the resulting maggots will be eaten by the owls and owlets - as was seen in the previous years.
There's now a new clip 13.05 of all moments of each of the 4 eggs hatching.

At 0:25 AM Israeli time, breakfast was served: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qnx1l6RwCGs
and 15 minutes later, another owlet managed to take his turn http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D8vOppqZ6h4
I can't understand how they manage to swallow a complete mouse - well, admitted, afterwards - they just fall over from weight!

I was watching them live and wondering about the way they had formed 2 groups -- maybe it is the fed and the hungry, with the hungry being by the door I would guess.

DUTCH LITTLE OWLS
She's been so ruffled since the chicks has hatched
And it is interesting how she rests with her head down. Does she have her forehead on the floor? Watching the chicks constantly?

it's like she is covering all holes with her bodyparts as much as it is possible, leaving a space for the owlets beneath her. look how she is letting her wings down to the floor too (like head)Bellatrix wrote:... Thank you very much! Impressive sight, I did not believe that chick swallow a rat whole. It's amazing!Bosuil wrote:At 0:25 AM Israeli time, breakfast was served: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qnx1l6RwCGs....

I'm not sure whether it was a mouse or a rat, but Barn Owls for sure eat rats. In any case, them swallowing it as a whole prey makes it harder for the smaller chicks to get their part.Reptile wrote:(...) I did not believe that chick swallow a rat whole. It's amazing!
I mailed one of the people of the Israeli Barn Owl project: the first chick hatched May 14, so it's a month old today.
About the Little Owl: as you can see, in various corners, mouse are now stashed (with flies very interested in them, but some get eaten by mrs. Little Owl).
If you haven't seen these, check out the earlier clips on the right hand side of the webcam image of 16-03 "Paarband verstevigen" (improving the bond between them) and 26-03 "Knuffelen en een goed gesprek" (preening each other) to hear the communication between the parents!

OMG. OMG I've just had a look at them. They look so ... weird I am completely dumbstruck. They resemble rats more than birdsBosuil wrote:At 0:25 AM Israeli time, breakfast was served: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qnx1l6RwCGs

Mr Noctua sometimes shows a healthy interest in the mice during his visits, but the mother of the family prevents him from following through... :)
I also heartily recommend those videos!Bosuil wrote:If you haven't seen these, check out the earlier clips on the right hand side of the webcam image of 16-03 "Paarband verstevigen" (improving the bond between them) and 26-03 "Knuffelen en een goed gesprek" (preening each other) to hear the communication between the parents!

Some time ago I posted links of common swift webcams. The swifts have returned to the nestboxes.

From here you can find links to other boxes
Edit: the swifts come home at sunset and leave in the morning

Mrs Little Owl looks like a ball the way she curls up to cover the little ones -- who are currently "peeping" up a storm.

I have seen them and especially "knuffelen" is my favourite (not mentioning that I love the Dutch word, because it is so onomatopoeic )Muscovy Duck wrote:

yes, "knuffelen" hits the point :-)
I begin to like the dutch language - there are many speaking words for me as a German
I'm curious if the little Little Owls will look more than our cute Tawnies or mor than the funny Barn owlets, when we can see them better...
by the way: the little Great Tits are cute now... with some feathers an eyes open. In the beginning they woudn't have won a price for their beauty neither
