9:31 a woodpecker with a cone. i think this looked some other woodpecker than the greater spotted...?

edit: it was a greater spotted woodpecker again (see the post by vainamoinen below).

Not a word from Durberts?
Maybe he's fishing with their parents? It is time, that he learn it
Ame, that's a beautiful GIF of the Siskins

i haven't heard Durberts but i think i maybe heard Durbe once, from very-very far, maybe when the siskins were there.
edit: yes Durbe called at 9:26:25, at about 40 s from the beginning of the siskin-video.
i have to go now, i'll be away most of the day.

Black stripe on the side of head hasn't any gap. It's typical Dendrocopos major. Also no other woodpeckers use seeds from cones as food.ame wrote:a 'close-up' of the woodpecker.

ok, thank you vainamoinen.vainamoinen wrote:Black stripe on the side of head hasn't any gap. It's typical Dendrocopos major. Also no other woodpeckers use seeds from cones as food.
i'll correct the name in the above post.
i didn't know that D. major is the only cone-seed-eating woodpecker. that was a valuable piece of information. it means also that the Finnish name for D.major 'käpytikka' (= literally 'cone-woodpecker') is highly appropriate.
D. medius or Leiopicus medius (as the new name is) is 'oak-woodpecker' (tammitikka) in Finnish. D. minor = the lesser spotted woodpecker or Dryobates minor (new name) is 'little woodpecker' in Finnish ('pikkutikka').

17:34 a fairly big bird with seemingly long wavy tail flew by the nest. it looked like as if it were dragging a flag or pennant behind it...
i have no idea what this could be..? & &
a normal view video to give an idea of the flight pattern and altogether look.
a 'close-up' clip in slow-motion (1/3 of normal speed). i tried to make a 'camera-run' to follow the flight.
btw: i heard Durberts call at about 17:32.

It looks a bit like a Psittacula krameri, a green parakeet that has become almost a plague in the Netherlands. A long time ago some escaped birds seemed to do very well and spread all over Western Europe. But I cannot imagine that they live in Latvia. The silhouette looks a lot like it.ame wrote:17:34 a fairly big bird with seemingly long wavy tail flew by the nest. it looked like as if it were dragging a flag or pennant behind it...

a parakeet or a parrot, both are equally exotic for me. in Finnish there's only one name for these parakeets, cockatoos and rosellas: all are parrots = 'papukaija'. and a papukaija is exactly what came to my mind, too.
btw: i heard Durberts calling a few minutes after the "parrot" had flown by. he called quite many times, but it didn't sound like a delivery.
18:22 Durberts called again. he doesn't sound very hungry, it was more like out of obligation.

No, this species hasn't reach Latvia yet.

I think "long wavy tail" in reality could be long legs. So, this bird may be is a crane or something alike.

With the seemingly long tail it looks a bit like a parakeet, but is certainly is not a Rose-ringed. Far to big and the flight and wing beats far to slow. And when it is silent it can't be a Rose-ringed Parakeet anyhow We would have heard it already long before it came into sight.
When on the left side of the screen it appears to have a broad white upper tail with probably trailing long grasses.

I figure these deliveries are going to go down away from the nest more often as Durberts slowly but surely acquires her hunting skills.Liz01 wrote:EDIT: there was a delivery. Unfortunately, out of sight

I wouldn’t be so sure I was very surprised when in Brussels I saw a whole colony of bright-green, red-beaked parakeets in the middle of a very busy street intersection. They are several thousands in the Belgian capitalvainamoinen wrote:quote="Marfo":

The closest Rose-ringed parakeet lives to Latvia is the western part of Germany, roughly between Stuttgart and Dortmund.
