The woods are lovely, dark, and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

Iris and Louis stopped by the Hellgate Nest, today, to bring and arrange sticks. It won't be long, now, before they migrate. May they have safe travels and return to us in the spring. And this next season, no disasters!

 Seira, I was hoping that Iris would have a different mate this year.
I know that many people love Louis, so I’m glad that they are happy.
I can’t wait to see “Queen” Iris arrive!
I love her!

Why would you want a different mate for Iris, Cessie?

 Chimega, since last season when the 3 chicks starved to death. That was devastating for me. The year before last, the eggs with Louis didn’t hatch, as you probably remember, Chimega.
Yes, I know that this is nature, and we can’t always expect a perfect season.
I was hoping for a new male for Iris, not that I wish anything negative towards Louis. Just a fresh start for Iris.
That said, I will watch the nest if I’m certain that there is good fishing this season.

Well, yes, the first year the eggs didn't hatch and we don't know if the shells were weak and broke easily or what caused them to be so easy to break.

Last year was a heartbreaker for sure. I watched that nest day and night and shot many videos of it. In fact, the other day I just found a whole folder full of photos and video of the first chick that had hatched and that was very sad to see. I'm not sure why those were in a separate file along with more videos. Very upsetting to see.

The mountains were very heavily snow covered and when that all thawed, it caused terrible flooding in the rivers all over that area. That made fishing extremely difficult and that's why the chicks starved to death. Because Louis couldn't bring in fish for the chicks.

Did you know there are quite a few other nests on the river, there, and in almost all of them, all the chicks in most of the nests also starved to death?

So it wasn't really Louis' fault that the water was to swift and so turbulent that he couldn't catch fish for Iris, either. It was the weather. There was another nest, last year and nearby where the eggs also didn't hatch and Dr Erick Greene said he thinks it was because of Mercury poisoning so there were many factors going on there that caused disasters in many nests.

Let's hope for a great and happy year for the Osprey this year.

Iris!!! So good to see her!!! She definitely is a Queen! Great Longevity! :loveshower:

Chimega, I didn’t know about other Osprey nests along the river having the same starvation last season. I think that it is better to have more than one place to fish nearby. Other Osprey nests, not that far from Hellgate, were successful, but I never saw an abundance of fish. Just enough to make it.
Fingers crossed that Iris and Louis fledge some chicks this season. Iris’s last 3 years weren’t successful. (2015 - hailstorm broke all 3 eggs close to hatch date, with Stanley.)

The hailstorm was't Louis' fault, either. And it was Dr Greene who told us about the other nests with chicks that died. Not nests on cameras. If he hadn't told us, we would have never known.

Chimega, I know that the hailstorm wasn’t Louis’ fault! Nobody is at fault for anything. What I was trying to say was that I hope and pray that Iris has a great year, she deserves it after the last 3 seasons that no one is at fault. Nature is nature.
