I have to get used to it. DX is the female and DZ the male. In my opinion DZ is going to be the perfect father for his future kids, like his father Ivo. :loveshower: I hug both from far away.

Irma and Ivo arrived in the nest and the gift from Ivo was a nice fish. Both Ospreys are eager to get food.

Hi again! Sorry for the delay, there are long fieldwork days in July. But now the rain helps to keep promises :)

Sorry also for the selection of ring codes. I realized too late that it impacts naming of the chicks. But I din’t have many rings left.

Anyway, the long-waited important figures are as follows.
DX - wing length 282 mm, weight 1570 g, tarsus width 11.5 mm. This nestling is presumably younger (shorter wing) and a girl (heavier, thick tarsus).
DZ – wing length 292 mm, weight 1330 g, tarsus width 9.6 mm. Presumably older nestling (longer wing) and a boy (lightweighted, thin tarsus).

For now I have used Scottish experience for sexing the nestlings (see Hardey and other’s „Raptors, a field guide ...“ http://eurapmon.net/sites/default/files ... osprey.pdf) where the differentiation is set at 1400-1450 g. Later, I will use sampled feathers to verify sex in the lab. I have no idea when it will happen - there are long fieldwork days in July :)

Good to see that everything is again fine in the nest (although a bit wet) :)

BTW, do you remember the Latvian female with a red ring 718, who stayed at the nest before arrival of Irma? She found herself a new home and a new mate and is now happily breeding some 15 km away where she has two little chicks to take care of. I think I will call her Ieva :)

Wow, that is SUCH good news! Thank you Ulo V, for all the information!
For sure everyone in the Latvian forum will be very happy about the Latvian female 718/Ieva! :loveshower:

Edited: If I may ask... The Latvian female successfully paired with Ivo. Could it be also possible that she now raises Ivo's chicks with some other male?...

Thank you so much Ülo for this information.

I too am so happy to hear about Latvian lady 718. I was really worried about her. She deserved a nice family of her own :loveshower:

I want to thank all of you who post about this nest. I rely on you for your comments and pictures to keep me informed when I cannot be here to watch. :hi:

*Awwwww* :loveshower:

What happy news! Thank you!

I think despite we all wanted and waited for Irma´s return we felt sorry for 718/Ieva and that Irma´s return caused that her future on this nest ended. And now she has an own nest with an other mate and even two chicks :chick: :chick:

Thank you so much for this precious and greatly appreciated information, Ülo.

Even more so that 718/Ieva's table of fate has turned to her advantage. I did think a lot about her and I was feeling so sorry. So happy for her now. Will her chicks be ringed as well?

Is there a possibility that a camera be installed on her nest? :whistling:

I have the same thought as Sunshine: Could her egg(s) be sired by Ivo? I guess there is no documentation about such a scenario.

Ülo, thank you for the information about DZ and DX!
So DZ is the first hatch and a male, and DX is second hatch and a female!
The weights of great!
I had thought the opposite, DX 1st DZ 2nd, because X comes before Z.

What great news about #718! I was confident that she would find a mate, and I'm very happy that she has 2 chicks! I love the name Ieva that you gave her! :D

I know that you are very very busy, but if you find any or all of Irma's offspring with chicks, we would be beyond happy to know that!!
Thank you again!!
