25.The Swedish Sea Eagle Project
Antaget 10. maj 1998, Björn Helander
The White-tailed Eagle Haliaeetus albicilla was fairly common in Sweden until the early or mid 19th century,
but was subsequently brought close to extinction by persecution. When legal protection was enforced in
1924, a few tens of breeding pairs (bp) remained on the Baltic coast and in northern Sweden (Lapland). The Baltic population recovered slowly and reached about 100 bp in the 1950s. An alarming decrease in reproductive success was first noticed in the early 1960s. Retrospective studies have revealed that the deterioration in breeding success started already 10 years before that. The cause has proved to be the heavy contamination with organochlorine pollutants. Surveys of the breeding population 1964-1970 showed
a further drop in breeding success. This led to the start of Project Sea Eagle in 1971. The project combines
research and management activities with the overall purpose to ensure the long-term survival of the sea eagle
in Sweden.

32.Notes on the behaviour of the White-tailed Eagle in Greenland
Noter om Havørnens adfærd i Grønland
Kaj Kampp and Frank Wille, 1997
Summary in English available
"Much of our knowledge of the behaviour of uncommon and solitarily living wild birds, including most raptors, stems from random observations which were sometimes collected by investigators during questionnaires, sometimes published separately and later compiled in handbooks. The present paper presents behavioural notes on the White-tailed Eagle Haliaeetus albicilla collected during a multi-year study (1976-80) of the eagle’s diet in South Greenland (Wille & Kampp 1983). Observations at seven eagle territories were made from hides for a total of 351 days, mostly at nests with young, but sometimes elsewhere in the territory (e.g., after the young had fledged). Supplementary observations were made for 32 days at five nests in 1981-83.
Pictures and tables, e.g.: “Time spent on the nest per 24 hours by the female and male eagle, respectively, at two nests in South Greenland (average over 48 hours). Also shown are observed feedings of young by the parents.”

34.Ergebnisse der Vogelzählungen an March und Thaya im Winter 2007/08
50 White-tailed Eagles counted in the Austrian/Slovakian/Czech borderland, Central Europe. (March/Thaya riverine forest, January 2008). Successful breedings in this region since 2002.

35.The White-tailed Eagle in the State of Brandenburg and in Berlin, Germany – status and conservation
Situation und Schutz des Seeadlers (Haliaeetus albicilla) in Brandenburg und Berlin
T. Langgemach, Corax 19, Sonderheft 1 (2002)
"The present status (2001) of the White-tailed Eagle in the State of Brandenburg, Germany, and conservation efforts are described and compared with the situation five years ago.A mean productivity of 0.98 young per breeding pair (1992-2001, n = 707) and a mean brood size of 1.44 young per successful pair has led to a further increase of the population in Brandenburg which numbered up to 103 (registered) occupied territories in 2000 and 2001. At present, the population density is 0.35 pairs per 100 km2. Mean productivity is slightly increasing. Within this development sea eagles are colonising increasingly unusual habitats, and they now even occupy areas belonging to the city of Berlin."
