1.Breeding, artificial incubation and release of White-tailed sea eagles.

by Claus Fentzloff in 1984 in International Zoo Yearbook, Vol. 23, pp. 18-35.

The article describes especially the artificial incubation process and hand-rearing of the eagle chicks in great detail, as well as different methods of "planting" hand-reared eaglets in the wild.

3.Nesting time diet of the White-tailed Sea Eagle in different archipelago zones on the Åland Islands

Camilla Ekblad, Institutionen för Ekologi och Systematik, Avdelningen för populationsbiologi, Februari 2004

"The subject of this study was the diet during the nesting time of the white-tailed sea eagle Haliaeetus albicilla in different archipelago zones on the Åland islands during the time-period 1978-1999. The aim was to investigate whether the diet of the sea eagles differs according to the archipelago zone where they breed, if the diet of closely nesting eagles differs, and if the diet of the sea-eagles on Åland has changed during the time-period 1978-1999."

5.Food of the white-tailed eagle Haliaeetus albicilla in Greenland

Frank Wille, Kaj Kampp, Accepted 11 July 1981, Copyright 1983 Ecography
"Six nests of white-tailed eagles in the southernmost Greenland were watched during the nestling period and food items recorded photographically by remote controlled cameras. The species composition of the food was representative even for the adult eagles' diet. Fish made up a major part of 90%, various bird species and arctic fox pups the remaining 10%. The total intake of an eaglet amounted lo 50 kg from hatching to fledging. The daily requirements of fledglings, some 800 g fish food, are equal to previously reported values for older birds. The rate of food consumption of eaglets is constant through most of the nestling period."

8.Diet and feeding habits of the Black Kite Milvus migrans, Red Kite Milvus milvus, White-tailed Eagle Haliaeetus albicilla and Lesser Spotted Eagle Aquila pomarina in Wigry National Park (NE Poland)

Source: D. Zawadzka, 25 Czerwca 68 b/15, 26-600 Radom, Poland
Acta Ornitologica, 1999, vol: 34, number: 1, pages: 65-75

"The study was conducted in the years 1989-1993. The Black Kite fed primarily on birds and fish. Red Kite - on birds, mammals and carrion, the White-tailed Eagle - almost exclusively on birds and fish, and the Lesser Spotted Eagle on small mammals, birds and frogs. The White-tailed Eagle was the most specialised species. Its food niche breadth was smallest among the studied species and food taken in water habitats accounted for 95% of its diet. The Black Kite had the widest food spectrum in terms of the frequency of prey while the Red Kite - in terms of the biomass consumed. The mean body mass of prey specimens taken by the White-tailed Eagle was 578 g, by the Red Kite - 235 g, the Black Kite - 230 g, and the Lesser Spotted Eagle - 34 g. The food niches of both Kites and the White-tailed Eagle strongly overlapped. The smallest overlap was between the food niches of the two Eagles and between the Lesser Spotted Eagle and the Black Kite."

9.Did White-tailed Sea Eagles train their young to hunt Common Coots?

Trainierten Seeadler (Haliaeëtus albicilla) mit diesjährigem Jungvogel die Jagd auf Bläßrallen (Fulica atra)?

Schafstall, W. (2000), in: Corax, Volume 18 (1999-2001): 205.

(in German language, English summary)

"On the 31.12.1999 two adult White-tailed Sea Eagles were observed to attack two Common Coots in the middle of a 98ha lake for about 20 minutes. The adult eagles were accompanied by a first-year young that did not take part in the attacks. The eagles did not kill the coots although they could have done so quite easily. It appeared as if the adults were showing the young bird how to hunt waterfowl."

12.Using time-lapse digital video recording for a nesting study of birds of prey

Vitali Reif and Risto Tornberg

European Journal of Wildlife Research , Volume 52, Number 4, 251-258, DOI: 10.1007/s10344-006-0039-1

Abstract
Remote photography using various photo, movie or video devices has been employed in numerous studies in wildlife research during the last 50 years. Given the rapid advances in digital technologies, digital video and photo techniques are becoming more common in use, and publications that introduce a new method or equipment for video surveillance in wildlife research (and in ornithological studies particularly) are appearing almost every year. However, still no special guide to the great variety of equipment and methods is available, and the choice and use of suitable gear for scientific purposes may be difficult for non-specialists. In this paper, we review the most common surveillance techniques used in today’s nest studies, as well as the most essential properties of image recording equipment. We also describe the digital video recording technique, which we used for observations of raptor nests, and summarise our experience of its operation. As an example of the obtained data, we present the timing of prey deliveries of goshawks and common buzzards.

13.Breeding Biology of the White-tailed Eagle Haliaeetus albicilla in Hokkaido, Japan

Shinya Mori, Japanese Journal of Ornithology, Vol.29 , No.2-3(1980)pp.47-68_8

"The White-tailed Eagle Haliaeetus albicilla is the only sea eagle that breeds in Hokkaido. Its breeding area is restricted to the northern and eastern coasts of Hokkaido. This species also breeds in the Kurile islands and is a rare or uncommon winter visitor in Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, Ryukyu and their adjacent islands. Although there are several reports on the nesting of this eagle in Hokkaido, the breeding biology of the Japanese population has been virtually unknown. The present study has been conducted for sixteen years since 1963, and sixteen nests with eighteen nestlings were examined by the author."
