Large birds - the incubation period is long and nest life goes on for a long time. The tiger owl chicks were hatched in the last ten days of April and the incubation lasted 35 days.

In the video we see how the female keeps the prey to herself and finally flies away with the food to get the chicks to the ground – hunger is of course a good helper. The night before last the first young tiger owl took flight and is now busy somewhere on the ground near the nest (the adults have surely found a suitable spot for this).

The most dangerous period is beginning for the young birds, but also the time most rich in experiences. Flying skills have to be completed and getting used to dangers (the tiger owl chicks are almost half a metre long, compare with the mother in the video, but still ”kids”).

Prey animals have been seen only as they have been brought to the nest, and among them the greater part seems to be aquatic birds. Small rodents make up only a fourth of the food, but all this we will learn …

Tiger owls are stationary and long-living owls whose lifetime stretches to a couple of decades in nature, sometimes even more if they are lucky.
